Dispute[edit]

This article is strongly intolerance and must be rewrited, fairy-tales about "russian mafia" is discrimination. Russian tourists helps Morjim to reach the one of highest level of life in Goa, created workingplaces and infrastructure, brings people of Morjim money for their business, development and education. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 118.94.110.195 (talkcontribs) 06:02, 20 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

So where is the dispute ? All to be seen is somebody barely litterate ranting in support of Russians allegedly in the name of prosperity.

rewrited[sic] instead of rewritten

fairy-tales[sic] instead of fairy tales

Russian tourists helps[sic] Russian tourists help

reach the[sic] one

Etc....

If you must argue, remember that it is impossible to defeat an ignorant man in argument.

Even if you beat a fool until he's half dead, you still can't beat his foolishness out of him.

Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience. - Mark Twain — Preceding unsigned comment added by 117.207.209.186 (talk) 14:21, 1 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Article needs correction[edit]

This Wikipedia article Morjim (in Goa, India) 'Russian Expatriates' section has a strong anti Russian bias not based on fact.

Currently, there is no Government or Police report which is conclusive about any foreign crime group in Goa.

What are the facts?

- The facts are the Russians are the largest group of foreign tourists in Goa, India. In this article from CNN IBN in 2012, "1,33,683 Russians arrived in the coastal state as against 1,17,683 British tourists during 2011-12". But no substantial involvement in crime according to Government and police records. (Link below)

http://ibnlive.in.com/generalnewsfeed/news/goa-russians-pip-british-on-tourist-arrival-front/978436.html

- As published in India's largest English news paper 'Times of India' in 2012, "Foreign tourists from 50 nationalities were involved in crime cases in Goa in the last three years, the Goa assembly was informed the list of nationalities named include Swiss, Australian, USA, French, German, Dutch, Norway, Portuguese, Swedish and Italian besides British, Israelis, among others. " There was no mention in the parliament of any mafia by any country (link below)

http://articles.timesofindia.indiatimes.com/2012-07-15/goa/32684472_1_foreign-tourists-goa-assembly-crime-cases

- What about drug arrests in Goa, India? As published in India's largest English newspaper 'Times of India', "Breaking down the records for the year 2011, out the 56 persons arrested, 30 were Indian and 26 were foreigners. Out of the 26 foreigners, 10 were Nigerian, 5 were Nepalese, 3 were French, 2 were Italian, 2 were British, and there was a German, Korean, U.S and a Ghana citizen who were all arrested." (Link below). As you can see most of the drug activity is controlled by Indians and of the foreigners they were mainly from Nepal and Nigeria. No major drug arrests from Russia. (Link below)

http://articles.timesofindia.indiatimes.com/2012-07-08/goa/32587796_1_kg-drugs-foreigners-police-stations

- The Current Chief Minister of Goa, Mr. Parrikar, set up a Parliamentry Probe in August, 2012 to investigate the alleged role of Indian politicians to the drug mafia in Goa. The Current Chief Minister set up the parliamentry probe to unearth facts of the drug mafia police nexus in Goa. The chief minister described the issue as serious because he felt powerful Indian politician's were 'involved'. There is no mention of any foreign mafia (Link below)

What is wrong with this Wikipedia profile? It quotes Indian politicians of one political party Congress making allegations and selective media reports presented as facts. Not a single academic journal or a National Commission report is linked to. These include allegations by one political party Congress politicians and MP even as it alleges in the same paragraph another Congress politician has ties to Russians. It quotes another politician as 'demanding a probe'. When does any politician's demanding a probe be significant enough to get a Wikipedia mention? Note that politcians from the same Congress Party were the elected Government in Goa for 5 years till 2012 and did not arrest a single person whom they could prove was from mafia of any country.

Someone has left a entry in 2013 in this Wikipedia profile which shows the anti Russian bias 'On 2012-2013 New Year's Eve at 0:00 Club Fresh (owned by a Russian and her husband) was trashed by an armed gang consisting of more than 20 men in retaliation over business quarrels, guests were injured including children, property damage to the resort was incurred as well.' If you see the hyperlink, it has names of the two Indian owners of this club. Also, the Russian lady is married to an Indian. But only the name of the Russian was used in Wikipedia. None of the 3 Indian names mentioned in the hyperlinks were published in Wikipedia. This seems like bias to me. And how does a fight in a club qualify to become serious enough to make it to Wikipedia?

Please could any Wikipedia Editor look into this and correct it if he / she feels this is biased. It seems that some people are using this forum to promote hatred against people from one country. We need a Wikipedia Editor to give a balanced perspective to cover both sides GoanJourno (talk) 06:03, 3 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia Morjim's Article reflects the problem and is unbiased in my opinion[edit]

There has been a recent article from 'The Goan' http://216.15.194.90/thegoan/Details.aspx?id=1744&boxid=7501046 a reputable paper, its' contents are the same; a malaise is present in the village and Morjemkars are concerned/worried about the Russian grip in their native village. There are constant clashes and vulgarity, sex, rowdiness, nudity etc... It is an undeniable fact, and no other village and its' nationals are having such an infamous reputation in the press. Never has there been so many negative news reports about a particular nationality as with the Russians.

CNN IBN has explicitly reported that there are Russians from the Mafia operating in Goa Morjim based on the National Security Advisor's report:

http://content.ibnlive.in.com/article/31-May-2007india/how-russian-mafia-took-over-goa-41824-3.html

U.S. State Department depict Russia as mafia state[edit]

'Russia is a corrupt, autocratic kleptocracy centred on the leadership of Vladimir Putin, in which officials, oligarchs and organised crime are bound together to create a "virtual mafia state", according to leaked secret diplomatic cables that provide a damning American assessment of its erstwhile rival superpower.'

http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2010/dec/01/wikileaks-cables-russia-mafia-kleptocracy

Now why should the offsprings in Morjim be different ? Or they happen to be an exemplary irreproachable bunch out of sheer coincidence and luck ? I'll opt for what is said by the Guardian. Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 95.141.27.41 (talk) 16:14, 15 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

One of Goa Police Chiefs denies Russian mafia exists[edit]

The CNN IBN reports quoted above was printed more than 5 years ago. Years after that one of Goa's Senior Most Police officer in charge of Morjim as well told national newspaper Telegraph that Russian mafia in Goa was exaggeration.

Bosco George, the north Goa superintendent of police, says it would be an exaggeration to talk of a Russian mafia in Goa, though there have been Russians who have hidden facts about themselves from both the Goa government and the home country

I will be adding many such independent news and police views later this week.

This year Times of India did article on Morjim residents very happy to give their homes to Tourist guests. Will find and add to Talk Page

Morjim villagers disgusted with the behaviour of Russian Tourists[edit]

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lJ4RoHnk7ew

You can't have your cake and eat it. Make up your mind.

Let's have the villagers first remove from their lexicon, Russian Mafia, Drugs Mafia. They themselves enjoy saying it.

Why is it ok for Indians to Run Restaurants all over the world. Be cabbies in NYC, London ? But when this happens in your turf for you bigots you resent it.

So it's ok to emigrate all over the world but when people immigrate to your place you become all xenophobic. What about reciprocity ? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 79.141.172.14 (talk) 14:34, 26 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar does not believe that Russian and Israeli mafias operate in Goa, but Mumbai police are sure of it,[edit]

Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar does not believe that Russian and Israeli mafias operate in Goa, but Mumbai police are sure of it, Wikileaks has claimed citing a recently declassified US diplomatic cable.

The cable dispatched by Mumbai Consul General Paul Folmsbee in 2009 quotes former head of Mumbai Crime Branch Rakesh Maria saying that trafficking of foreign women prostitutes to Mumbai is controlled by Israeli and Russian mafia lords operating from Goa.

"Maria alleged that most trafficking of foreigners to Mumbai is connected to Russian and Israeli mafia operations in Goa, explaining why Mumbai police had not cracked the trafficking ring(s)," Folmsbee's cable numbered 09MUMBAI305 back home to the US administration said.

Maria is currently the head of Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism squad and was one of the lead investigators in the 26/11 terror strikes in Mumbai.

Earlier this week, Parrikar had assured the Goa legislative assembly that there were no foreign mafias in Goa.

"Russian, German or Israeli mafias are not existing in the state of Goa," said Parrikar, who was responding to a question from Congress legislator Reginaldo Lourenco.

Over the last few years, the assembly has been host to numerous instances when legislators have alleged that foreign mafias have been controlling the sex and narcotics trade in Goa.

The cable, however, said that tracking the kingpins of these trafficking cartels was proving to be very difficult for Mumbai police, and that most Indian women who were trafficked abroad were disguised as "classical Indian dancers".

"Maria said that trafficking of Indian women abroad for sex work often takes place under the cover of cultural shows like classical Indian dancers. He said that many Indian women are trafficked to the United Kingdom on visas for cultural dancers, but use the dancing as a front to solicit sex," Folmsbee said, drawing a comparison to dance bars in Mumbai.

Dance bars proved to be good recruiting grounds for traffickers as women working there were willing to go abroad to make more money.

Don't bite the hand that feeds you[edit]

To all you Maka Paos.

Get your act together before stigmatizing a nationality. There is a saying in Russian 'the fish rots with its head' this about you and your elected trash who represent your shithole of Goa. All your scummy ministers are on the take.

Addition of Citation[edit]

Hello Wikipedians,

Citation needs to get added in the Beach section in the third paragraph beside the word "Warrior".

Here is the citation link to get added as citation in the sentence "Some youth of Morjim have campaigned internationally on the Greenpeace ship Rainbow Warrior."

Link :https://alchetron.com/Morjim

Please take out some time to check and consider my suggestion related to addition of citation. Prudent CAS (talk) 12:11, 4 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
