Improvement[edit]

I will be adding to Mr. Sherman's article fairly soon. Based on my research in several print sources, I think I can add to or elaborate on his efforts in his rail-building activities in Los Angeles, and in his development efforts in both Arizona and the Los Angeles area and beyond. In addition. I do intend to give only a brief overview of the various rail companies themselves (Los Angeles Consolidated Electric, Los Angeles and Pacific, Pasadena and Pacific and, finally, the Los Angles-Pacific Railways), as the railways themselves are covered in separate Wikipedia articles (or should be). I will also post a longer list of references, including references to various street railways, land development deals, biographies, general histories and newspaper articles. This is October 10 - I anticipate being able to do this over the next several weeks. Just thought I would give any watchers a "heads up". 1951bfrj (talk) 19:55, 10 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I have corrected a few errors, such as date of death and the details concerning the sale of control of the LAP to Harriman in 1906, and smoothed out some of the language - There is more to Sherman than I had at first thought. I continue to work on a larger expansion of the article, but must focus on a large writing project at work as well - 1951bfrj (talk) 21:36, 7 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

San Fernando Valley[edit]

Will be correcting the existing prose which confuses two separate syndicate purchases and the nature of of what Sherman may or may not have done around 1904. There were two syndicates - one purchased an option on the George K. Porter ranch (around 16,500 acres) in 1903, and took up the option in 1904 or 1905. Sherman was not part of this syndicate, but this is the purchase that Sherman was alleged to have informed the purchasers so the syndicate could take advantage of the coming aqueduct. Their company was the San Fernando Mission Land Company. The second one is the purchase in 1909, well after the aqueduct had been announced, of 47,000 acres in the southern half of the valley - the five member "Board of Control" was comprised of Sherman, Harry Chandler, Otto Brant, Hobart Whitley and Harrison Gray Otis, who brought in 30 others to purchase the land. So this group bought the property - it was not a rush of speculators (as in a bunch of individuals who separately purchased lots of separarate properties, if that is clearer) In addition, in all the sources I possess (see the Bibliography), there is no suggestion that the profits he made in real estate made up for flagging railway profits. There really isn't any information on how much he made in real estate profits, and on the railway, the LAP was sold for a reported $6 million in 1906, and that he had sold Huntington his interest in the Los Angeles Railway in 1898, and made a nice profit for himself, as YHuntington put it. So I'll be adding info about the 1909 purchase, which he was very involved in, and some info about his activity on the Water Board and why he was booted off the Board in 1909 - and will remove the statements about profits. 1951bfrj (talk) 05:48, 9 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
