current form is very "tarmac" centric (cars and bikes), while there is rally marshal and the marshal disambiguation page i think we need a "motorsport marshal" page that then describes the term generally with perhaps specialist article branching off for rallying, circuit/tarmac racing and even off road motorcycle sport. Track marshal → motorsport marshal — The proposal of this is to merge this rally marshal and auto race workers into one single article as other than the type of circuit they work in, there are very little difference between the three — Donnie Park (talk) 04:11, 12 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

There are quite a few differences between the two continents, however there are many more similarities. Perhaps thought should be given to moving the differences into those separate articles leaving the Motorsport Marshal as the "disambiguation" as I could not see the change--Chaosdruid (talk) 08:39, 27 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

English variety[edit]

@Dennis Bratland: This article was not "flipped" from one variety of English to another, as you put it. It used both interchangeably, often within the same section, which is not allowed per WP:ENGVAR, and I chose British as it appeared to be the primary variety in use on this page. It also seems the more natural fit as British spelling is used across the majority of motorsport articles that are not focused on North American racing. But that is not what WP:ENGVAR says. It says the existing variety should be retained -- so all you have to do is look at the first edit to see this page began in US English -- "the variety used in the first non-stub revision is considered the default", says WP:RETAIN. Some editors did later -- in 2009, three years after the article was created -- come along and made additions using the wrong spelling, and that encouraged slouching towards UK English, which is exactly what the policy is supposed to avoid. I have no idea what you mean by "natural fit". Marshalls are used in racing around the globe. What reason is there to claim strong national ties to the UK, per WP:TIES? --Dennis Bratland (talk) 18:11, 2 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I wasn't making that claim, simply telling you my reasoning after you asked for it. My only concern was the two different varieties of spelling used, which now appears to be resolved. The idea of sticking with the spelling of the original author regardless of what everyone else has used since is a tad silly, so I have no objection to ignoring it and making a call when faced with this situation. It probably is silly but the point of the guideline is to settle these spelling disputes quickly and cleanly so we don't waste much time on it. If we allowed switching from spelling A to spelling B because over the course of a few years spelling B started to seep into an article, then nationalists favoring spelling A will say they're under siege and being persecuted, and a long and pointless discussion will ensue. Or worse, they'll retaliate. Stick to the guideline without exception, and the warring camps stay at peace. So please do not ignore this guideline and do not make arbitrary calls with regard to spelling. It's quite provocative to many editors, and has been the cause of some of Wikipedia's longest, lamest debates. --Dennis Bratland (talk) 22:15, 2 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I'm of the exact opposite view of QueenCake: if it ain't broke, don't f*ck with it. Why create headaches over which variant to use when there's an established one?
