Background[edit]

This article is really no more than a stub, and starts at the end of the story. Joseph Chamberlain became one of the most influential politicians of his day after his term of office as Mayor of Birmingham in the 1870s, when his municipalisation of the water and gas companies of the city was a roaring success, and heralded effective imitation by local authorities across the country. The Birmingham Electric Supply Company was acquired by Birmingham Corporation in 1900; the Torquay Corporation Water Works went back to 1856. Deipnosophista (talk) 15:13, 2 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
