Expansion[edit]

I am in the process of expanding this article. I have added sections on the tabernacle, the choir and the announcers. It is still under construction, but I will be working on it more. Sylverdin 19:26, 3 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure that this is a relevant part of information for the introduction:

An email reply to an inquiry for why the program is not currently provided in podcast form was provided by the Account Coordinator for Bonneville Communications:

Because of the music licensing regulations and the new pod casting regulations and costs, it would cost the Choir around 50-60 cents for each Music and the Spoken Word MP3 download. The show and the Choir are non-profit efforts. They have no resources to cover MP3 download costs, neither can they charge the consumers for downloading.

Hopefully in the near future we will be able to provide pod casting.

If it is to be included in the article, it probably should be changed into a reference and put as a footnote. Honestly, it just doesn't fit with the continuity of the article. It is way too specific and is too long compared to the rest of the article. Sylverdin 19:59, 16 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Weekly Broadcast[edit]

I've watched your program every Sunday Morning, here in Western New York, at 6:30 a.m......for years !!! It started my Sunday....even though I attend my church, faithfully, every Sunday.....(I enjoyed the choir, having been in my church choir most of the past 55 years.... I also was able to be in attendance for your Christmas Concert, in SLC, in 2004, and was able to enjoy watching a "rehearsal" in July, 2008....) The Sunday a.m. "Music and the Spoken Word" was carried on the "Hallmark" Channel.....Since Jan 1, 2010, it is no longer on....anywhere, any time....I miss it....I deeply miss it !!! Please keep in mind that this is a Wikipedia article about this program, not a website run by or affiliated with that program. Number of episodes[edit]

I tagged the number of episodes in the infobox with "Citation needed" because I have no idea where that number came from and I was concerned that editors were just updating the number each week instead of the information coming from a published source. I'm hoping that someone adds a source soon so I don't have to remove that content. Thanks, Bahooka (talk) 15:01, 17 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

The number is accurate. At the conclusion of each television broadcast, the number of episodes is show. At the end of each radio broadcast, the number of episodes is stated. The number cited in this article reflects the correct information. A cursory Google search found last Sunday's episode with the episode number attached to it. Thanks for the efforts, Jgstokes. It appears something is not in sync - either the article's "as of date" or the link. The link seemed to pull up episode #4,462, as shown in the article, but with a 22 Mar 2015 air date. Thoughts? ChristensenMJ (talk) 22:58, 25 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

That's funny. It was working correctly when I originally posted it. I found a better source for the episode number. On the official "Music & the Spoken Word" website, there's an option to view the weekly message and a program overview once the program is over. This link takes us to where that can be viewed. And if you look underneath the date the message was given, you get the episode #. According to the site, last Sunday's episode was #4475. No problem. It was just an issue of knowing where to look. It didn't take much research. I just googled the question, "How many episodes of Music & the Spoken Word have aired?" The official site of the show had links to the weekly message, and it just so happened that the episode number was on the same page, large as life. Now the question is, will we have to post a link to each weekly message when updating the episode number, or is this source sufficient to allow us to update the number without additional sourcing? It wouldn't be too hard to cite the latest message when updating the number, but if we had to do that every time, it would soon become tedious. Is there any way we can set up an automatic counter on this, based on the current source we have, that would automatically update the episode number and latest air date? I know that there are templates that can automatically update the age of a person or organization, or the number of temples in the Church. Is it possible to do something like that here? The only problem I can foresee is if there is ever a week when a live broadcast doesn't air, which happens a few times a year. Thoughts? --Jgstokes (talk) 05:13, 27 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Adjustments to the wording that opens and closes each broadcast[edit]

Hello again, everyone! I have had this in the back of my mind for a while and wanted to mention it here. Around a year or two ago, the wording whereby each Music and the Spoken Word broadcast began and concluded was altered slightly. The broadcast now opens with Lloyd Newell saying: “From historic Temple Square in Salt Lake City, we welcome you to Music and the Spoken Word, with the Tabernacle Choir [& Orchestra] at Temple Square.” And it concludes with these words: "Today’s performance continues the 92nd year of this historic program. Please join us next time for Music and the Spoken Word. Until we meet again, may peace be with you this day, and always.” I realize that we might have to verify the new wording of the program's opening and closing with a reliable source, which would not be a problem. If I (or anyone else) is able to find such a source, would this information be sufficiently noteworthy to include here? Thanks. --Jgstokes (talk) 05:40, 2 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

No more half updates, please[edit]

Just a quick note here: a user with only an IP address updated the episode number and as of date, but didn't bother to update the source used to verify that the update was correct. I just had to clean that up in this case. If any user is going to bother taking the trouble to update any part of that episode count, they need to update the whole thing. And if they are unwilling or incapable of doing that, they need to leave the entire update to someone who can do it fully. Sorry if this comes across as angry or condescending. That's not the intention here. But if the full update had been made by the aonymous IP, there would have literally been nothing for me to clean up or complain about. So I think it's fair to insist that only full updates should be made going forward. And anyone unwilling to do that can post here to ensure someone else who can handle the full update is aware of the need. Thank you. --Jgstokes (talk) 17:53, 28 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
