Why is everybody so concern about Mariah's sales?[edit]

Music Box maybe has sold 32 million worldwide TO DATE because in 1994 Sony released a statement that it has sold 23 million copies worldwide so compare the span of 2010 minus 1994., it has been 16 years ago since that sales figure occur so by estimated sales it must be definitely 32 its just an estimation and all of the albums in best selling albums of all time are just estimation.

I do really have a feeling that these persons lowering the sales of Mariah are I'm not gonna name by i think u have a clue.... http://media.gunaxin.com/the-top-selling-albums-of-all-time/23419 —Preceding unsigned comment added by REGICUAZA (talkcontribs) 17:49, 10 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Everything Fades Away[edit]

Sales[edit]

Universal Music Group Korea list the sales at 26 million.

- Universal Music Group Korea PhoenixPrince (talk) 05:09, 16 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It actually says 25 million - and is a valid reference. And although this is a fansite, ties in with what has been reported by Universal over the years [1] Eight88 (talk) 00:54, 31 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
From TSort (1993 - 2008)[2] = 25 million Global claimed, 20 - 27 million claimed on Internet.
From Entertainment wire Press Release (1998) [3] - 24 million.
From New York Times Press Release (2002) [4] = 23 Million.
From Universal Music Group Korea (2004) [5] = 25 million.
From publication "The Story Behind 50 Years of Great Recordings": Outline Press Ltd (2005) - ISBN 1-59223-295-7 = 27 million.
From Live8 Mariah Biography (2005) [6] = 24 million.
From Undercover.au (2008) [7] = 32 million.
Therefore from all the verified sources (Press Releases, Record Company, publications) - the figure is 23-27 million. From one source that does not state where primary source detail is from (Undercover.au) - has highest figure, does not meet criteria as being a notible Press source compared to the others, and is so varient to the others, has limited credibility. Wikipedea has policy on using verified sources, as well as concensus WP:RS, and this has not been met by the one source being used. Therefore as the publication of 2005 meets all criteria, this should be adopted. Eight88 (talk) 22:44, 31 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I agree completly. The article on Undercover.com.au is adding to every album few millions and there is absolutely no other source to prove these high numbers. Music Box didn't even sell 28 millions, but I'm leaving this number and its source

[8] till I find a better one with more realistic number. Max24 (talk) 07:42, 10 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

All the persons above are u really a fan of Mariah??? hmmmmm........

I agree with Max24, we have to work with the more realistic numbers. I even changed the sales of Madonna album's Music to 11 million copies, since it's more accurate then the 15 million one. And we have a lot of reliable sources that says this album sold less than 32kk. The 32kk sales it's very recently spread by the media, and I think that everything begu here in Wikipedia. Even Sony Music says 23kk not long time ago, so how this album sold that much, since it's out of the charts worldwide?
  • One more thing. I erased some content of this page accidentaly, because I thought that it was auto-archived like many other. But this doesn't happen. I'm sorry--88marcus (talk) 18:56, 21 August 2017 (UTC).[reply]
I appreciate you taking it to the talk page. Also, what's with the fan stuff mate? Let's keep to the facts. As you can see, those sources vary from over 20 years ago. They increase naturally. Now, you can argue about sales/certifications (which is OR) but Billboard magazine from 2012 is more reliable than any. Not to mention I can provide more sources than those above for 32m. Bro, take The Immaculate Collection, shouldn't that be by 25m by your logic? PS I disagree with you, I think Ray of Light should be at 20m it has long been accepted and reported.--PeterGriffinTalk2Me 20:44, 21 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
PS. Music Box sold more than Immaculate in every country except the UK. Every other European country, that's right, European country she's bested by Mariah. Not to mention 2.2+ million in Japan alone. So yeah...--PeterGriffinTalk2Me 20:49, 21 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Billboard magazine is only reliable to USA charts, they can't verify sales worldwide, like Soundscan do to them in USA. Everybody should know that. So if BM is so reliable, what about this 1995 article, they said the album sold 23kk (according to Sony) link, at the time the album was out of the charts around the world (in USa it re-entered a month latter in October 7, 1995), and was certified 8x platinum by RIAA, the same year. The album was finally certified Diamond in 1997, and 4 years latter her record company says the it sold 25kk link , so the 2kk more came from the USA. Unlike the Immaculate, this Mariah's album is not a big catalog seller, its last position in the charts was in June 1996, charting for three weeks, see here [9]. So how this album could sold that 7 million copies more without charting anywhere?! I think the 28kk is the more accurate to the final sales, that means 3 million copies more, to little markets where the album was not a selling.--88marcus (talk) 21:36, 21 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Billboard has an atrocious habit of reporting Record company verbiage. They reported Interscope's 8 million for Born This Way as total worldwide sales which was debunked here in Wikipedia and editors settled for 6 million. We can always analyze any album we feel is over the actual thresholds. Maybe we can set a threshold based on the market at that time and compare with the certification. We certainly follow that for List of best-selling music artists. Just a thought on how we can approach instead of edit wars. —IB [ Poke ] 04:59, 22 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Change Source for Sales[edit]

I would like to change the source which is currently this http://www.ticketspecialists.com/concerts/mariah_carey_tickets.htm which claims its sales at 28 Million- to this source http://www.undercover.com.au/News-Story.aspx?id=4687 -which claims the total sales to be 32 Million...please express your opinion ...THANKS!!!--Petergriffin9901 (talk) 06:06, 3 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Why are you writting this like you didn't see what is written above? You have your anwser there. The source won't be changed for fake and inflated figure from Undercover. We can eventually reduce the number that is in the article now - 28 million - to a smaller one per sources posted above.Max24 (talk) 08:42, 3 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

So let me ask you this Max ,from what kind of source are you looking for these sales to be from. You dont accept pretty much any source at all, lets just clarrify, will you accept billboard? or sony music, or reuters?...please express--Petergriffin9901 (talk) 17:07, 3 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, just wondering...[edit]

Maybe it is just because this album released in 1993? but I am used to seeing the "Sales and certifications" in a subheading usually in separate chart from the peak positions and located on the article page to the right of the peak positions. By the way, WP:CHARTS examples does not show "Sales and certifications" columns within the peak positions table.
Also notice some missing peak positions, as I would expect that it charted in the Belgian Albums Chart (for example) if it has a 2x Platinum cert for the country. But yes, I do realize that it may be that a reliable archive for this chart (and the others) may be difficult to locate.
Again just some things that I noticed.—Iknow23 (talk) 03:27, 17 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Austrian all time chart[edit]

The source that places this album at No. 32 all-time on the Austrian Albums Chart appears to be a decades chart not an "all-time" chart. Could someone confirm that? --Starcheerspeaksnewslostwars (talk) 17:36, 2 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

You're right. I'll fix that.--CallMeNathanTalk2Me 16:31, 4 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned references in Music Box (Mariah Carey album)[edit]

I check pages listed in Category:Pages with incorrect ref formatting to try to fix reference errors. One of the things I do is look for content for orphaned references in wikilinked articles. I have found content for some of Music Box (Mariah Carey album)'s orphans, the problem is that I found more than one version. I can't determine which (if any) is correct for this article, so I am asking for a sentient editor to look it over and copy the correct ref content into this article.

Reference named "canada":

I apologize if any of the above are effectively identical; I am just a simple computer program, so I can't determine whether minor differences are significant or not. AnomieBOT 12:20, 3 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

If Mariah received an award in 1994 for this selling 20 million units.[edit]

How can it even be argued that the only verifiable sales are 14 million? She received a Rockefeller Center Award for 20 million sales in 1994. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 149.125.100.86 (talk) 00:57, 23 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

This era was not her first TOTPS visit[edit]

She had already appeared live on TOTPS while promoting Emotions and I'll Be There, in 1991 and 1992 respectively. Dreamlover would have been her live THIRD TOTPS appearance. Links below.

Correction: The Music Box era was her 4th and 5th visits to TOTPS as she had already appeared here with Emotions, Can't Let go and I'll Be there. Dreamlover was 4th, Hero was 5th. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.185.208.185 (talk) 04:11, 2 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding changes to the worldwide sales figures of the album[edit]

Please refer to this RfC (originally found at Talk:Mariah Carey albums discography), which has determined by consensus the worldwide sales of Music Box to be 28 million. While consensus may change later as this number increases over time, please do not arbitrarily change the sales figures without discussion and solid, reliable sources to back the change. Good article status ... and persistent change of album's sales figures, mainly by IPs[edit]

I don't know if the good article status here should be questioned, but there has been repeated disruptive editing with unsourced changes to sales figures in this article for many months now, which I and other editors have reverted. Does that affect the GA status? MPFitz1968 (talk) 15:53, 23 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Music Box has sold above 30 million before the streaming era.[edit]

Mariah's recent MB30 anniversary mini documentary stated sales of over 32 million for Music Box. We have to take those as confirmation of all its unknown sales! .

Sony Legacy reports:

With more than 30 million copies sold worldwide since its release, Music Box is Mariah Carey’s top-selling album and one of the best-selling albums of all time.

https://www.legacyrecordings.com/202...available-now/ Sony Japan reports (translated):

It is a monster album that topped the album charts in more than 15 countries around the world, including the United States and the United Kingdom, and sold over 30 million copies worldwide, and over 2.6 million copies in Japan alone. https://www.sonymusic.co.jp/artist/M...5?id=aep230908

So I think it is fair to assume over 30M 190.115.181.72 (talk) 17:03, 13 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
