Historical Background[edit]

Might want to mention that the /reason/ for what even at the time was pretty unusual instrumentation, was that when Handel approached the king about music for the event of the fireworks, the king originally didn't want /any/ music. He finally reluctantly agreed to let Handel furnish music for the occasion on the strict condition that he NOT use and strings, but only "martial" instruments.

Hence we end up with two dozen oboes, a dozen bassoons, and a bevy of trumpets.

London Bridge[edit]

The shops and houses were cleared from the Old London Bridge, and a new central span constructed, a decade after the Royal Fireworks. There must surely be something wrong with the anecdote about the bridge collapsing. If the source is the same as for some other details, this might cast doubt on them too.
