Rewrite/Recombine

This is a good second half (or final third) of an article. Yes, "Chicago Blues" has a special meaning associated with Chess Records, but to begin this article a full 20 years after Louis Armstrong made Chicago the center of the musical universe... is bizarre.

It's in Chicago that the first generation of African-American-diasporic musicians (including Satchmo and Lil Hardin, King Oliver, Art Hodes, Earl Hines) make jazz into something more than just the working-class Mississippi-river brass-band music that it had been before. Chicago is where the the foundation of jazz as a truly national (and international) style, begins.

And why no Ma Rainey (1910s-20s), no Rosetta Tharpe (1930s-40s)? Even the blues part of this article seems to pretend it begins with the male artists who showed up 20 years after the Chicago Blues divas made the blues what it was and still is. This all happened in Chicago, long before Muddy Waters.

Move/rename

You might want to rename this article Music of Chicago (c.f. Music of New Orleans, Music of New York City, Music of New Jersey). Reasons:

1. Per MOS:CAP#Section headings jazz should not be capitalized unless this is a proper name, and "Music" is entirely superfluous. (Examples: Jazz, West Coast jazz, Rock and roll).
2. Even Chicago jazz is questionable, since I don't think this is recognized as a distinctive genre, and articles for local jazz scenes are not established on Wikipedia. While distinctive genres named after regions (European free jazz, West Coast jazz) exist, we don't have articles for regional jazz scenes (even New Orleans jazz, which redirects to the specific genre Dixieland).

Music of Chicago would go in Category:American music history, which seems like a nice match for this article. / edg ☺ ☭ 18:31, 22 March 2008 (UTC)

Chicago-style jazz

I think the current Chicago Jazz Music#The Chicago style section contradicts Dixieland#Chicago style. I don't know which is correct, but I wouldn't count on the section in this article because I added it. / edg ☺ ☭ 19:51, 22 March 2008 (UTC)

Style confusion

Wikipedia has no article on "Hot jazz", and I'm getting conflicting information about what was invented in the south vs. Chicago. It is possible that the current description of "Chicago-style" is inaccurate, and may be confusing "Hot jazz" with Chicago-style Dixieland. It would be helpful if someone knowledgeable in the genres (or well-connected for references) could look this section over. / edg ☺ ☭ 22:31, 22 March 2008 (UTC)

Hot Jazz

I did some researching, and I found out hot jazz is another term for Dixieland jazz.So we shouldn't create an article for it.Mertozoro (talk) 02:29, 12 April 2008 (UTC)

House is the punk rock (or jazz, whatever) of Chicago

So what's the deal with the header of this article NOT mentioning house music like from the very start.

“Chicago is also well known for its soul music.”

Isn't Chicago the Mecca of house music? Didn't house music originate in Chicago (actually it was New York but don't let them tell you otherwise)? Nevertheless, house IS a native genre to Chicago unlike hip hop, punk and jazz which are all foreign genres to Chicago yet doesn't get half the recognition it should in this article. Why does it always have to be outsiders who always go full "erm excuse me but house is the music of Chicago just like jazz is THE music of New Orleans"? But see how the "Music of New Orleans" article reads:

“The music of New Orleans assumes various styles of music which have often borrowed from earlier traditions. New Orleans, Louisiana is especially known for its strong association with jazz music, universally considered to be the birthplace of the genre.”

Assume I am wrong, feel free to cancel my edits and we can discuss the actual importance of house music to Chicago here because frankly I have no idea. Does house music even exist? ItsAlwaysLupus (talk) 20:12, 25 April 2014 (UTC)
