Which is correct?[edit]

Title says Nefud; text says Nafud. Which is correct? Loganberry (Talk) 20:07, 14 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Its Nefud

It's a transliteration of an arabic dialect to english, there isn't a "right" way in all likelihood. I've found both in various sources. Adam McCormick (talk) 02:31, 5 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

An Nafūd is the BGN Standard, according to the NGA, that is the official US government standard, Nafūd is a generic and is Romanized as such according to the Board of Geographic Names standard, to use the name in English the proper variant would be Great Nafud. Area[edit]

If you multiply 180 and 140 you get 25 200 not 40 000 square miles. It is unprobable thath the desert is strictly rectangular so the area would be even smaller. This means that at least one of the figures are wrong. I am working with substubs on swedish wikipedia and tried to expand their article about this desert with material from the english when I found this error. From what I can find it's probable that the width figure is incorrect and ought to be closer to 380 than 180. I haven't been able to find better than maps though. See this imprecise map and line it up with this map which would be much closer to the 40,000 square miles. Adam McCormick (talk) 02:22, 5 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
