In fact, he ran for University of Calgary Student Union President in 1991 and won in a land slide. - Nenshi's performance in speech and debate is noteworthy through high school and university. 1991 was not his first foray into politics, if you count the fact that he ran for (and won) Student Council treasurer when in Elementary School at Oakley Center. Religion[edit]

I would propose removing his religion from the column on the right. I fully support mentioning his religion in the article itself, but no bio of any previous mayor lists their religion as a stat, and I suspect nor would future mayors, therefore this should not as well. A proposal with Skorpiius's comment, we should take out Nenshi's mention of being a muslim, however I have seen many politician's articles on wiki, that has a info box, that mentions religion, and perhaps a signature. I'm not sure how to make this. But if you like I can eventually address this Skorpiius, if there are no objections from the masses here. (do the vote for for or against please). This being the case. I'll take the liberty to add your vote for "for" and my vote for "for" for the proposal of 'making info box, and putting Nenshi's religion in the box'. Added "Ismalli" as his religion in the bio box... as some politicians have it. Like Stephen Mandel mayor of Edmonton, mentioning he's Jewish... Can you find any examples of a Christian politician that has this in their info box? I have a suspicion that Christian is the default state of a politician and therefore it is only mentioned if it deviates from this. Pawlowski[edit]

-- Short answer (read the section for a detailed relationship with Pawolski and the city of Calgary): Pastor Art Pawolski is an Evangelist preacher of the Calgary Street Church. His congregation serves about 600 homeless. He claims that his congregation is being perscuted since 2005 during Bronconnier's term. He was fined many times. His latest saga was Christmas 2011 when his congregation was escorted out of city hall. Sum media Ezra Levant a constant critic of Nenshi wrote a article claiming Nenshi is a Anti-Christian Bigot. Since Pawolski is a constant character with city hall where Nenshi is currently mayor it's relevant. I was already wondering about that section, and specifically if it is undue weight. Is this really a "key event" in Nenshi's mayoralty? Is it even all that notable? Pawolski got his 15 minutes in the news after getting kicked out of City Hall, but the story never went anywhere. I'm not entire certain that section even belongs in this article. It seems trivial. However, if it does stay, avoid words like "recently". That is completely meaningless without context. Resolute 22:08, 28 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I would add that the City Charter subsection is likewise questionable. There is no value in mentioning that Nenshi, Iveson and Redford sat down for breakfast one day. Things like greeting a citizen for being the 100 millionth transit rider. Again, not a key moment. There is a lot of cruft here, and it detracts from truly important parts of Nenshi's mayoralty. --- The City charter is important though. (I could however put that under (bylaws and social and economic section if you prefere. I just didnt know where to put it). I though it might be interesting as it gives municipalities (what minster Doug Griffins wants) the power to define themselves, and shows the evolution on the municipalities act). I was thinking of just shortening the paragraph, (like with the links provided any curious reader can get this informaiton themselves). I was thinking just putting the shortened paragraph into a Ezra Levant section, because Ezra probably will in the future continue to critique Nenshi's policies... Already Levant has proved to be a constant fixture.... Not so with Pawolski he seemed to have disappeared. Would that work out better Resolute?

format advice[edit]

Nenshi was reinstated as a second term mayor, and a 4 year term mayor as provincial legislature set the terms at 4 years. I'm having troubles cramming this information from just his 3 year term... I worry that if I make a section to divide both terms, it'll just make the essay look like a big wall of text.... I was thinking of using my headers from his first go as Mayor, but that may make things more blobbly. So I'm going to use a system where I just plug these variables in his political life under their right heading, by choronical order, if the Saga is more than 3 paragraphs can it get it's own subsection? I'm sure all this saga with him and Levant will continue, and him and Wenzel.. When he runs for PM or Premier things are going to get REALLY crazy... :_C..... -Samcat

Which is why things like the small-coverage-and-gone things like the Calgary Street Church minister's ramblings have no real place. You're right that this article will continue to grow, which is why it is important that it only summarize key points, and that it do it in summary style. Meaning, we don't need incremental updates on things. (i.e.: having breakfast with someone. Or four paragraphs on the McCall Lake golf course closure) The lawsuit, for example, needs only a few sentences: Nenshi's comments, Wenzel's reply, key part of the complaint, key part of Nenshi's rebuttal. Sammycat: Will be doing some major trimming, once I get some free time. About the Calgary Street preacher. Being accused of being Anti-Christian is a big deal. But I'll trim that down. Like nobody has to know that the church panders to the homeless etc. Also alot of the posts I tried to give both sides of the view, because alot of people who read the article, considered it one sided and a violation of the Wiki neutreality.

-Anyways thanks for this suggestion Resolute. Did some experimental editing. Article looks more professional, less tabloid. The really detailed stuff can go back into the papers and the biographies about Nenshi... Will be editing more in the future. (I'm just currently involve in a archive project at the museum (more research for another article on Wikipedia lol). So I'll be whittling down this article when I get a chance to. Now some observations, the reason why I added the walls of text in some articles, is that some of our readers critique that this is just a propaganda for Nenshi. (When the links are clearly visible to read the articles in detail). Also I'm trying to covert to layman's writing, Vs. The wall of text essay writing where the professor grades you for all sorts of colourful details. Where as our Wiki readers want "wiki" speedy knowledge, so bear with me as I learn master these skills of editing. Remember it's the unfriendly nature of more seasoned editors Vs the small fish newbie editors that is killing our movement.

Writing style[edit]

Let's remember that this is an encyclopedia article, not a blog entry. If we want Wikipedia to be credible, then we have use correct spelling, sentence structure, punctuation and grammar. References to reliable sources are needed, too. Please be careful with your edits: don't just throw down whatever comes into your mind or was in the news this morning. We should use plain language so that the article can be understood by most people, but "Layman's writing" cannot be justification for sloppy writing. I just did a major copyedit of the article - I was surprised that an article about a major political figure was written so carelessly. City consultation with environmental research group[edit]

I have changed or removed several statements in the section City consultation with environmental research group. (1) "The city consulted with Pembina for technical advice.[85]" ... actually the ref said absolutely nothing about Pembina, so removed. (2) "Ezra Levant accused Nenshi of contracting $340,000 to Pembina" ... actually the ref makes clear that Levant accused the city of Calgary (not Nenshi) about that amount and Nenshi supported it, so changed to show that. (3) "despite the organization's rule as the city's environmental engineering advisor since 2007, and as consultants for oil companies" ... WP:SYNTH, so removed. (3) "The primary source of the $340,000, however, were contracts given to Pembina during Bronconnier council's initial inquiries in 2007." ... the word 'however' is improper since Wikipedia's isn't arguing with Levant, and most of the money wasn't given out in 2007, so removed. (4) "Renato Gandia described the environmental engineers as 'left winged whigs'" ... actually Gandia's article doesn't contain either phrase, so changed to show that 'left-leaning' was in the headline. (5) "Nenshi defended the environmental scholars as being the "best guy in the business" ... actually Mr Nenshi understands grammar and said something quite different, so changed. (6) "Derek Fildebrandt of the Canadian Taxpayers Federation ..." etc. ... The paragraph is about CTF's report of invoices to the city of Calgary which mostly were done during Bronconnier's term, and nobody said they have anything whatever to do with Nenshi (who became mayor in October 2010), so removed. (7) "The affair concluded with a Twitter argument between Levant and Nenshi went viral" ... grammar correction, and removed claim about going viral since it was not in the ref. (8) "Nenshi apologized for his remark." ... There was nothing about an apology in the cited source, so removed. Peter Gulutzan (talk) 17:18, 28 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Egregious composition[edit]

The entire article reads like an English-as-a-second language test essay: “...issued a challenge to his opponents to confront him directly and not to engage him in a proxy campaign of lobbying as he warns his supporters that his opponents will likely engage in” (Tense confusion.) "the uncanny similar challenges Toronto and Calgary faced” (Adverbs modify adjectives.) "Although the comparisons are allegorical examples of the differences of the administration,” Allegorical??? “.. hmm so how's the secondary Internet Service treating you. I'm sure your lossing out on tax benifits. Instead of the actual 360 Internet here in Calgary we end up with accountants from Nasa im pretty sure they got fired, but like I said losing out on the tax benefits not knowing whom the really Internet would be.
