Flags

The country by country section might be pretty with the flags, but is bulky, unsourced and very possibly unencyclopedic. I've put it at User:Deiz/Nando for now. Sourcing and reformatting to ensure the most economical use of space should be minimum requirements for readding. Deizio talk 13:03, 13 December 2006 (UTC)

Then how do you suggest it be incorporated into the article? --Mikecraig 21:47, 13 December 2006 (UTC)
The number of restaurants in each-and-every-country is not encyclopedic. A sentence akin to "They have over N locations in X countries around the world including Yland, Zland and $land." + a source (their own site would be fine for this) would be just fine. Deizio talk 23:15, 13 December 2006 (UTC)

Halal and Kosher

I think it may be a good idea to separate the kosher and halal information from the background section at the start of the article and create a section that deals with either special diets or geographical differences in the menu. --UK 007 17:16, 27 January 2007 (UTC) i want to make nandos in buchrest

Fair use rationale for Image:Nando's logo2.jpg

Image:Nando's logo2.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Sexually explicit?

I saw the Australian ad. with the pole-dancing mother. How was it sexually explicit? There wasn't even any simulated or suggested sexual activity. Was anyone actually quoted as saying that in the media? If not, I don't see why it should be described that way in the article. Thedangerouskitchen (talk) 06:38, 2 April 2008 (UTC)

"Nando's is known in South Africa for its humorous but often controversial adverts. One such television advert from 2000, involved a blind woman being led into a pole intentionally and knocked unconscious by her guide dog, which then proceeded to eat the chicken that the woman had just purchased. This caused an uproar within the blind community and caused the South African Advertising Standards Authority to call for the withdrawal of the advert" How did they manage to see it? Aha! Not so blind after all eh? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 89.168.68.84 (talk) 23:07, 14 July 2009 (UTC)

Article name

Uhh why did the article name change from Nando's to Nando's Chickenland...I cannot find any reference on this?? --Mikecraig (talk) 23:15, 3 September 2009 (UTC)

Owner

Is it worth listing who owns Nando's somewhere on the page? (I believe its the same company as owns Pizza Hut and/or Subway)--TimothyJacobson (talk) 20:16, 30 July 2010 (UTC)

Its a privately owned South African company. The pricipal shareholders (and founders) are Fernando Duarte & Robert Brozin. The individual restaurants are franchised so their ownership is different. AFAIK Pizza Hut and Subway are American companies. Roger (talk) 18:47, 31 July 2010 (UTC)

I just visited a Nando's in Washington, DC after having enjoyed its food all over South Africa. I found it strange to see that Nando's South African origin is completely left out of their US menu and US website. It purports to be a "Portuguese" restaurant and features only Portuguese wines--ignoring the excellent South African wines they could promote.

This marketing choice is strange given that Washington DC's population is over 50% African-American. If Nando's admitted its true roots, this could benefit them (but… maybe Nando's is owned by white South Africans who aren't too proud of their own roots?)

Rate Nando's Links

We cannot link to the "rateyournandos" sites per WP:EL, the Wikipedia policy on external links. Quoting from the policy, external links "should be kept minimal, meritable, and directly relevant to the article." The rateyournandos site is somewhere between a blog/self-published site and an open-wiki (all of which are not to be linked per the subsection WP:ELNO). That site meets none of the criteria of WP:ELYES. Thus, the links cannot be included on this page. If you for some reason disagree, please explain below why you believe this link meets the requirements set out in WP:EL.

Interestingly, I just noticed that further down in the WP:ELOFFICIAL section, it discusses how to handle "official links" to corporations' (etc.) websites, it explicitly says, "More than one official link should be provided only when the additional links provide the reader with unique content and are not prominently linked from other official websites." All of the worldwide links are easily found through the main nando's page, so I'm going to remove them now. Qwyrxian (talk) 03:55, 1 September 2010 (UTC)

Source of restaurant name

I added a message over on the talk page of the IP editor disagreeing about the name and how information is added and deleted to WP articles. Let me copy the relevant part here, especially in case that user is on a dynamic IP address:

"There's no such thing as a "stalwart article." Even those articles which have been Featured Articles are still subject to change on a daily basis. No piece of information on any page is sacrosanct. What is mandatory, however, is that all information on all pages be verified by reliable sources. The statement about the name of the restaurant is not on the company's webpage--I looked through the history section at both the UK website and the international website, and it said nothing about the name. If you have a source that verifies the name, feel free to re-add it with the citation. If not, however, that info is not allowed to be there per policy."Qwyrxian (talk) 14:26, 2 September 2010 (UTC)

I also checked the South African site, on the off chance that as the "original" site it might contain more historical information than the others - but no luck - there is no explanation for the name. However allow me to remark (not for sourcing purposes of course) that "Nando" is a fairly common contraction of "Fernando" in the Portuguese speaking South African community. Roger (talk) 20:41, 2 September 2010 (UTC)
Okay, I found a reference in the Portsmouth UK News that says the name come from the founder. The article is a restaurant review, but it appears to meet the requirements of a reliable source, so it's good enough for me. Plus, of course, it makes sense, which is always nice. No mention of a child "Nandie" like the IP editor wanted, but at least this verifies what was in the article a few days ago. I'll re-add with citation. Qwyrxian (talk) 23:41, 2 September 2010 (UTC)

Pictures

My opinion is that all of the pictures of specific places should be removed. The included pictures give undue emphasis to those particular locations, and don't really add any encyclopedic information. I recommend that we keep no more than 1 picture of the interior/exterior; I recommend the one in Canal Walk since it's 1) identifiably a Nando's and 2) South Africa is the headquarters.

Other opinions? Qwyrxian (talk) 08:58, 23 February 2011 (UTC)

I don't think we need to strip it down all the way to just one picture. Photos that are not obviously of Nando's restaurants (don't show a name or logo) should go - particularly the latest addition, done just a few hours ago by an obviously COI editor - photos of restaurant tables without any specifically identifying features. The sign on its own from Lahore can also go as its just a sign. Also the Singapore interior - it could be any restaurant. BTW I don't think the Canal Walk picture is very good its taken from a distance and an odd angle - it's almost just a photo of the signage too. The best of the pics IMHO is the one from England - it's clearly a pic of a restaurant and it is clearly a Nando's. Roger (talk) 09:12, 23 February 2011 (UTC)
I've gone ahead and reverted the last addition, as there is no clear evidence those are of Nando's. Qwyrxian (talk) 11:42, 23 February 2011 (UTC)

Trivia

These trivia items should be verified before inclusion:

Deizio talk 18:58, 9 December 2006 (UTC)

As they are trivial, they should not appear on the page even when verified--TimothyJacobson (talk) 20:16, 30 July 2010 (UTC)

You should probably add;

Several Facebook fan pages and groups are currently petitioning Nandos to open restaurants in their local towns, The Wokingham Fan Page[18] appeared in the local press[19] calling for a Nandos to open in October 2011 and currently has over 1400 members.

as well. Parts of this page read more like a fanboy's view of Nando's than an objective encyclopedia. 62.255.248.225 (talk) 14:59, 6 June 2011 (UTC)

World Map

With regard to the World map photo which has recently been added - it is clear that this map has been lifted from my personal website www.rateyournandos.com. Specifically the page www.rateyournandos.com/international.aspx. The creator 'lukeblake' has not contacted me asking permission to recreate my map for Wikipedia. I would like this map to either be replaced with the one created by myself, or the current map to be credited to my website as the source of its information. Please advise. The cited source does not clearly say whether either or both of ther founders were from Mozambique. Do you have a reliable published source that does support your claim? By the way, please don't SHOUT!. Roger (talk) 19:22, 6 November 2012 (UTC)

Sorry about the shouting- it was an accidental caps lock moment :) Robbie is South African: "When you meet Nando’s founder and iconic South African entrepreneur Robbie Brozin..." http://www.wits.ac.za/alumni/alumni%20news%20items/alumni201107/13304/news_item_13304.html Thanks! — Preceding unsigned comment added by MissRachelle (talkcontribs) 10:37, 7 November 2012 (UTC)

Also I can't find proof of this bit: "The initial design and corporate identity was developed by Mark Bischoff and Bruce Gemmel" and I think it's become urban legend, copied from this wiki source, as the company don't acknowledge it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by MissRachelle (talkcontribs) 10:48, 7 November 2012 (UTC)

Food

Hi

It says "Nando's specialises in flame-grilled Peri-Peri chicken. The chicken is served in quarters, halves, wholes, and butterfly breasts (UK and Ireland only)" They also do this in South Africa: http://www.nandos.co.za/menu02.html Thanks! — Preceding unsigned comment added by MissRachelle (talkcontribs) 10:54, 7 November 2012 (UTC)

Popular Culture

Ed Sheeran recorded a song about Nando’s – Nando’s skank - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dussnqvjy1g Rihanna was reported to have spent several hundred dollars on a take-away order at Nando’s. Initial reports claimed that the order was so large that the restaurant ran out of stock. A Nando’s spokesperson later confirmed that the order actually came to £483.75. http://www.standard.co.uk/showbiz/celebrity-news/rihannas-7000-nandos-mega-order-actually-came-to48375-7931741.html

Please update the website information for Nando's in India. The website address is http://www.nandosindia.com Bharathkanichar (talk) 11:01, 7 March 2013 (UTC)

Not done The Nando's India website is not mentioned anywhere in the article, only the main global site is specifically provided - this is in accordance with the English Wikipedia's standards for external links. (See WP:ELOFFICIAL). The one place where a reference from the nandosindia.com website is included it is correct anyway. Roger (talk) 12:16, 7 March 2013 (UTC)

Locations update

Several locations that used to be listed on the main Nandos.com website are no longer there. I'm in the process of changing the locations list to reflect the current listing on the website and various subsidiary "country" websites. Please help if you can - we particularly need sources that state that a particular branches have closed. As it is now, we actually have no evidence that branches that used to be listed on the website really did exist! Roger (talk) 07:07, 9 April 2013 (UTC)

You might find this helpful http://www.rateyournandos.com/countries-without-nandos I wrote the page and have some links on there regarding closures if I was able to find them. Feel free to contact to discuss. Jc sed8d (talk) 13:03, 12 April 2013 (UTC)

Controversies update

I have made an update to the "Controversies" section based on new information in the media (The Guardian) this month. A question has been raised regarding who "these people" are and what relevance the content has to a "South African company". The content and corresponding citation clearly state who "these people" are (the company responsible for managing a significant portion of Enthoven's finances) and the relevance to Nandos is readily apparent (a company representative directly responds to the article). Thanks.--Soulparadox (talk) 13:16, 12 July 2014 (UTC)

Who is Enthoven? What does UK taxes have to do with Nando's? If the issue is related only to the UK franchise holder then it should explicitly say so. The section's context is not as clear and obvious as you appear to believe it to be. Explain more and add specific contextual details. Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 13:49, 12 July 2014 (UTC)
"UK" is mentioned four times in the added content, so I am not sure how I can make it more explicit.--Soulparadox (talk) 04:50, 13 July 2014 (UTC)
By the way, "Enthoven"—as in "Dick Enthoven"—is the owner of the Nando's restaurant group. You will ascertain this from reading the citation I included, as well as the update I made to the "History" section.--Soulparadox (talk) 04:52, 13 July 2014 (UTC)

My revert

Re my revert, you can't "update" 1987 history with a mention of the two latest restaurants in obscure locations. The current number of restaurants in the country would be considerably more interesting. HelenOnline 14:33, 12 July 2014 (UTC)

I am not opposed to this and have no problem with your revision. No problem. Regards,--Soulparadox (talk) 04:50, 13 July 2014 (UTC)
Thanks, I did not see the other history section so partially reverted my own revert. Unfortunately I have not been able to find a more recent national figure. HelenOnline 08:07, 13 July 2014 (UTC)
