Thesis: McLay, G.N. ‘N.W.A.Wales — Architect’, Postgraduate Diploma thesis in History, October 1985. Nathaniel Wales joined the Dunedin Volunteers in 1862 and for 28 years put much of his time and enthusiasm into Volunteer activities. In 1886 he was appointed Lieutenant Colonel of 1 Bn Otago Rifle Volunteers, and shortly afterwards Commander of the Dunedin District. Chapter 4 of the thesis gives a comprehensive picture of his involvement.
