Is this a full list?[edit]

Is this a full list of National Academies of Science or a list of somehow reconised leading ones? Can these be added?

The default meaning[edit]

I spent a lot of time to find what means The National Academy of Sciences (NAS) without country. — Iurius (talk), 18:47, 6 September 2011 (UTC).[reply]

Hi Iurius, I understand this took you some time. But I find it more neutral when only one entry per country is listed here.
What do you think about the following:
  • We remove again your last revision
  • But we add (NAS) after the United States entry like this:
Is this good enough for you? -- SchreyP (messages) 19:14, 6 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Counterexamples: NAS of Belarus, NAS of Ukraine and so on. But The National Academy of Sciences (NAS) is unique. Sincerely, — Iurius (talk), 20:06, 6 September 2011 (UTC).[reply]
NAS is in the end the abbreviation for all National Academy of Sciences. What about following extension:
Then both names are fully mentioned, but on one entry. Better? -- SchreyP (messages) 20:36, 6 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
May be, it be better to delete the last line. Let the default meaning be in the first line. OK? — Iurius (talk), 22:46, 6 September 2011 (UTC).[reply]
Agreed. Google search on "National Academy of Sciences" gave 12.100.000 hits. A search on "National Academy of Sciences" -German -Azerbaijan -Ukraine -Belarus -India -Kenya -Korea -Uganda -Georgian -Armenia -Chinese, gave still 10.700.000 hits. I have updated as agreed and did a little copyedit according WP:MOSDAB. -- SchreyP (messages) 20:45, 8 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I haven't looked at the stats, but if the US link is the prime meaning, then this DAB article should be moved over to National Academy of Sciences (disambiguation), and a redirect National Academy of SciencesUnited States National Academy of Sciences. The current title does not suggest any prime meaning. +mt 13:24, 18 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Requested move[edit]

The following discussion is an archived discussion of the proposal. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. No further edits should be made to this section.

Page moved. Both of the oppose opinions use the systemic bias essay. However that addresses content and not article naming. The name of the US institution is not correctly named per the current guidelines, so if not the primary use, it should be at a name like National Academy of Sciences (United States). If you look at page views and ignore the dab page hits, the US article has 4,652 views against a combined 979 for all of the other articles with 'National Academy of Sciences' in the name or 83%. That is clearly above what is generally viewed as being needed to establish a primary topic. Also the oppose argument is that we are favoring US over Indian English. That might have merit if we were talking about article content or spelling of a title, but neither of those is at issue here. Finally we have the hits for the dab page, 790 or almost as many as the other articles combined. With the statement here it appears that most editors intend their links (over 95%) to be for the US institution from the cleaning up of the inbound dab page links. National Academy of SciencesNational Academy of Sciences (disambiguation)Relisted. SchreyP (messages) 19:59, 13 October 2011 (UTC) Relisted. Vegaswikian (talk) 19:46, 25 September 2011 (UTC) As per discussion in previous section the article United States National Academy of Sciences has the most hits and should be the prime meaning. With the (above) proposal to move current content to National Academy of Sciences (disambiguation) (and revert again to previous revision) and using a redirect on National Academy of SciencesUnited States National Academy of Sciences this prime meaning is more clear. -- SchreyP (messages) 16:46, 18 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  • Support: Web searches for "National Academy of Sciences" are overwhelmingly for the United States organization. +mt 19:15, 18 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose. The fact that web searches are most commonly for the American institution is irrelevant. Many countries have a National Academy of Sciences, which are as or more well-known within those countries as the American institution is within the USA (for instance, I was actually unaware that the USA even had an institution by this name, although I know many European countries do!). I do not think it qualifies as a primary topic. A rename would be introducing systemic bias. -- Necrothesp (talk) 13:43, 20 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support. With the exception of National Academy of Sciences, India, the U.S. organization appears to be the only one in a predominantly English speaking country. In the English language there is simply no other organization known as "National Academy of Sciences" that comes close the status of the U.S. organization. olderwiser 20:52, 20 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose Systematic bias, and preferentially treating US English over Indian English, since there's a NAS in India. 70.24.247.40 (talk) 07:09, 22 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment it's been a month, shouldn't this be a no consensus closure? 70.49.126.190 (talk) 03:57, 14 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support. If you Google "National Academy of Sciences" -wikipedia, the U.S. academy is results Nos. 1-5, while India's is No. 6. Even if you count the Indian organization as a significant use, that's at most a WP:TWODABS situation, not a reason to have a DAB here. The U.S. organization calls itself "National Academy of Sciences". That's what our article title should be. Kauffner (talk) 10:45, 16 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment: when I fixed links on August 29, 46 were changed to the U.S. one, and 1 to the Ukraine one. TimBentley (talk) 20:57, 17 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
