Beijing Observatory[edit]

I see the red link. Does the telescope exist? --Anna Frodesiak (talk) 07:24, 14 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Something's wrong with the title[edit]

Okay, the full name for NAOC is "National Astronomical Observatories, Chinese Academy of Sciences", not observatory of China. Hope someone can fix this thing Fieldequation (talk) 03:09, 10 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Requested move 22 October 2021[edit]

The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review after discussing it on the closer's talk page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.

The result of the move request was: moved to National Astronomical Observatories of China. There were no arguments made against this suggestion, which two of the four participants supported explicitly and another expressed openness toward, and the common-name and recognizability arguments in support of it resonate in policy. National Astronomical Observatory of ChinaNational Astronomical Observatories, Chinese Academy of Sciences – the former name was wrong Fieldequation (talk) 16:31, 22 October 2021 (UTC) — Relisting. Extraordinary Writ (talk) 00:19, 2 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

  • Oppose. There are certainly plenty of references online to both the National Astronomical Observatory of China and the National Astronomical Observatories of China and the abbreviation remains the NAOC. Is this a recent name change? -- Necrothesp (talk) 14:58, 27 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, I’m currently a student at NAOC… It’s clearly not a recent change (for example, Wang et al., 2008) and I’m pretty sure that we’ve been using National Astronomical Observatories, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing 100101 as our address since it’s established. Besides, NAOC is formed by merging 4 observatories and 3 of them are still operating individually, relatively. That’s why it’s called observatories Fieldequation (talk) 06:52, 29 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Then why is the abbreviation NAOC? I can see the argument for National Astronomical Observatories of China, which would be abbreviated NAOC, but not for the National Astronomical Observatories, Chinese Academy of Sciences, which wouldn't. -- Necrothesp (talk) 13:44, 3 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
National Astronomical Observatories, CAS. No other reasons, NAOC is simply NAOC, just like the abbreviation for Swedish-European Southern Observatory Submillimeter Telescope is SEST, not SESOST Fieldequation (talk) 06:48, 6 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Move to National Astronomical Observatories of China. 3,080 GScholar hits for this title vs 2 for the proposed title and 560 for the current title. There are also 2,860 GScholar hits for National Astronomical Observatories, CAS, but this name would be less WP:RECOGNIZABLE. Havelock Jones (talk) 14:50, 11 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
    • Support this alternative. Well researched. Andrewa (talk) 03:09, 12 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
