Footnotes[edit]

I've converted the external links/references into footnotes so it looks more tidy. The only section that badly needs citations is the History & Timeline section which I will try to help out on, of course. I can't do anymore today, though. --Ashley Rovira 17:41, 27 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Basic cleanup[edit]

I hope no one minds the simple cleanup job I did on the article. I did not change any wording except maybe a minor change of punctuation or position here and there. But by and large, the original wording is intact. It is a well-written article, very straightforward and informative. It just needed some tidying up. --Ashley Rovira 18:55, 17 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Well, it turns out that it was necessary to adjust wording, to prevent Wikipedia from having a plagirism suit on their hands. There were some copy-pasted parts in the NCCS President (formerly NCCS Staff) section. I adjusted wording and added citations. There are other citations to add, which I am working on.--Ashley Rovira 12:54, 18 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

NCCS staff section[edit]

Do you think we can create a page for Ellen Stovall, with all her information, and then remove all the information about her from this page? Then people can click on her name to learn more about her. Also, I suggest cleaning the page up to fit Wikipedia standards better. It's just a thought. I will have to look it over a bit more to see what can be done. --Ashley Rovira 17:09, 17 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Before doing that ask yourself 'what is notable about Ms. Stovall other than her leadership of NCCS?' Much of the material in this section is relatively non-notable (co-author on this, mid-level executive on that). Before creating an article for her, create one on 'The March'; if that survives and evolves into a full article, then I would be more comfortable with supporting a biographical article for her. Further, there are no references linking her to any of the organizations that she is noted to be associated with; listings from the organizations themselves do not provide sufficient support - rather 3rd party references, such as news items or book references, would be best. --User:Ceyockey (talk to me) 17:22, 17 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the feedback. I don't know anything about her life, so I wasn't planning on writing the article. I just thought that it might help clean up the page a bit. But you make a good point, I suppose. I don't know whatelse she is notable for. "The March" might be a good article. I do think that the NCCS staff section should include (very brief) info. about other staff members, not just the president, though. It's just my opinion. I'm not an expert on this at all. --Ashley Rovira 18:21, 17 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Cleanup needed[edit]

I came across this article today and my first impression is that it seems to have been written by parties that have a conflict of interest and seems self promotional. Can an interested party try to do some cleanup with WP:NPOV in mind? Thanks.--Jeff 17:03, 2 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

See also[edit]

I removed the "See also" section today for these reasons:

  • It was a pretty random list of organizations, with no apparent reason why this one is included and that one isn't;
  • It provided no information that isn't already available by clicking on the category links at the bottom of the page; and
  • None of links explained any of the content of this article or told the reader more about the subject of this article.

Overall, I concluded that the links were probably added on good faith as examples of "my favorite cancer-related organization," but not really appropriate to include in this article. WhatamIdoing (talk) 17:54, 3 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Major Edit Request[edit]

Hey all, I do media and communications work at NCCS, so therefore I have a COI. They asked me to look into making some revisions on the wikipedia page. I'm a long-time reader of wikipedia and, upon reading, it's obvious this page is not up to wiki standards. I'd like to suggest some major edits I've written in order to make it more neutral and substantive, with cited sources. Bear with me, I'm new to editing wikipedia. I've tried to read as much as I can about rules and editing and such. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Intro edit[edit]

In the intro, I suggest replacing "advocating for quality cancer care for all Americans and empowering cancer survivors" with "and works to effect policy change at the national level."

Mission edit[edit]

In this section, in order to reflect the organization's new focus, I propose replacing "quality cancer care for all Americans" with "quality care for all people touched by cancer."[1]

History and Milestones edits[edit]

The "History and Milestones" section is kind of clunky and unsourced. I'd like to strike the rest of the section starting with "In 1998," add a line break, then the following:

"In 1998, NCCS led the national grassroots campaign THE MARCH...Coming Together to Conquer Cancer.[2] An estimated 80,000[3]-150,000[4] people attended the event on the nation's capital."

Next, I propose adding an entire new section called "Publications and Advocacy."

Publications and Advocacy[edit]

On June 7, 2000 President Clinton issued an executive memorandum guaranteeing that Medicare beneficiaries who enroll in approved, high-quality clinical trials will have their routine patient care costs covered by Medicare. Ellen Stovall, NCCS’s Executive Director at the time, as well as other patient advocates, advocated for the measure that allowed more seniors to participate in clinical trials.[5]

NCCS published Imperatives for Quality Cancer Care: Access, Action and Accountability in 1996.[6] The report led to the creating of the National Cancer Institute’s Office of Cancer Survivorship.[7] From 2001-2007 NCCS contributed to several Institute of Medicine Reports related to quality care and survivorship. These reports include Ensuring Quality Cancer Care; Improving Palliative Care for Cancer; From Cancer Patient to Cancer Survivor: Lost in Transition; Childhood Cancer Survivorship: Improving Care and Quality of Life; and Cancer Care for the Whole Patient: Meeting Psychosocial Health Needs.[8]

In 2008 NCCS played a leadership role in the creation of the “Blueprint” for quality cancer care, a focus of the Cancer Quality Alliance. The Blueprint for a Better Cancer Care System includes a set of five cancer care case studies that present examples of systems failures, inverventions, and action steps.[9]

In 2010 NCCS became one of four patient-centered organizations invited to a membership of the Commission on Cancer (CoC) of the American College of Surgeons. These four organizations worked with the CoC to develop new patient-centered standards.[10]

Cancer Survival Toolbox[edit]

This section is troubling. Feedback would be appreciated. I'm struggling with not making the section sound like an advertisement. I'm thinking the first sentence should be edited thoroughly to read: "The Cancer Survival Toolbox is a free, self-learning audio program, developed through collaboration with patient advocacy organizations and health care and social work professionals to help people develop important skills to better meet and understand the challenges of their illness."

In the second sentence, I think perhaps "first published in 1998" should be added to establish a timeline, i.e.: "The program, first published in 1998, contains..."

I've also written an addendum to the end of the section, including sources. "The Cancer Survival Toolbox has won several awards including the Public Service Partnership Award of Excellence from the Public Relations Society of America,[11] The 16th Annual National Health Information Awards,[12] and the Gold Star Award, the National Cancer Institute’s highest award for patient education.[13] The program is available for free in compact disc and mp3 format through the NCCS website and iTunes.[14]"

I'm also proposing to add a section about the NCCS program called Journey Forward

Journey Forward[edit]

Journey Forward was launched in February 2009 through a partnership between NCCS, WellPoint, Inc., the UCLA Cancer Survivorship Center and Genentech. Journey Forward is a program that promotes the use of treatment summaries and follow-up plans that give clear steps for care and monitoring after active cancer treatment. Journey Forward’s custom-made Survivorship Care Plan Builder is available for use by any oncologist. In addition, Journey Forward offers an electronic Medical History Builder where patients can easily record their health history.[15]

First major edit. I tried to do my homework. I made most of the requested edits, and did some editing of my own. I didn't see much that could be controversial, here's the detail:

  1. I took out the "Mission" section and added it to the infobox, and updated it to reflect the current mission language from the NCCS website. I updated the physical address of NCCS, not sure if that was a typo, but the suite number was wrong.
  2. I made the requested edit to history and milestones, but kept the sentence at the end about Journey Forward. I also added some information about the origin of the term "cancer survivor," which apparently NCCS had a hand in coining.
  3. I added the Publications and Advocacy section and left it mostly unchanged from Zablondo's request.
  4. I don't know why Zablondo requested a Journey Forward section be added--it was already in the article in the exact same language. But the reference (as well as all the others) was helpful.
  5. I got rid of the "advertisement" tag in the cancer survival toolbox section, and also fixed the broken external cancer survival toolbox link and redirected to the section on NCCS' website.

If there are any other editors out there, this is my first major edit and feedback is welcomed! Diegolaluna (talk) 05:48, 16 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
