NSNs existed prior to 1974[edit]

Other NATO members were using NSNs well before the US adopted the NSN format in 1974. For example, a German G3 rifle magazine manufactured in May 1966 (date stamped "5/66" on the magazine) also has the NSN 1005-12-127-7057 stamped on the side.

The West Germans, at least, were using NIINs as early as June 1963, G3 magazines have been observed marked 12-127-7057. Magazines with the full NSN markings are observed from March 1964.
