Coat of arms of Libya[edit]

Citation needed (Hawk of Quraish)[edit]

The attribution of the eagle shape to the emblem of prophet Mohammad's tribe is strange. The running opinion says that the origin of the eagle is from the times of Salah Addin. Any one can provide a citation for that?

I made a lot of this page from the Dorling Kindersley Complete Flags of the World Book [1] and on the Libya page it says:

"The Hawk of Quraish is the emblem of the tribe of Muhammad"

If anyone has other contradictory sources then I would interested to see them or else I guess I could use a scanned image of the page in the book as a citation. Horses In The Sky ^{talk contributions} 12:23, 21 August

According to "Guide to the Flags of the World" by Mauro Talocci (edited and revised by Whitney Smith, 1982), the bird seen on the current Coat of arms of Egypt and Coat of arms of Iraq is called the "Eagle of Saladin", while the bird seen on the Coat of arms of Libya and the Coat of arms of Syria (and also the flag of the former Federation of Arab Republics) is indeed the "Hawk of Quraish" (or occasionally also translated "falcon"). Whether Saladin or the tribe of Quraish ever used these emblems in anything like their current form is yet another question, of course, but that's what they seem to have been called in 20th-century Arab nationalist circles... Which image is better?[edit]

Is Image:Libyseal.png or Image:Libya_coa.gif on commons more accurate? Libyseal.png almost exactly resembles the emblem of the former Federation of Arab Republics (but with the hawk's head facing the opposite direction, and the colors black on green instead of gold on white), while Image:Libya_coa.gif more closely resembles certain details of the emblem shown in the Talocci book (such as the legs and tail-feathers of the bird being clearly visible, and the scroll being held by the claws from above, not below), but it also has its own problems... I doubt they're using any coat of arms. They may damage or destroy any displays of the Ghadaffi regime's arms, but I would bet their main emblem would be a flag, in this case the old Kingdom flag. Fry1989 (talk) 00:25, 26 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

In many countries, the coat of arms or national emblem is much less known to ordinary citizens than the flag, and I doubt many people in Libya are worrying greatly about it now. There might not be a decision on the matter until months after a new governmental structure is installed, if certain historical patterns repeat themselves. (For example, when Qassem was overthrown in Iraq, those who overthrew him changed the Qassem flag in 1963, but waited until 1965 to change the Qassem national emblem...) -- AnonMoos (talk) 19:00, 27 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Text on CoA[edit]

The text saying "Union of Arab Republics" does not make too much sense. A sign at the Prague embassy has that caption. Another at the public utilities ministry says "The Great Jamahiriyya" (which makes much more sense). Some websites of ministries do not have any text at all (eg. The Federation of Arab Republics was Qadhdhafi's pet project during the 1970's, and is what most sources attest is the inscription of the post-1977 Libyan coat of arms (I greatly prefer flag/emblem reference books to embassy websites for most purposes). Continued use of the Hawk of Quraish post-Gaddafi[edit]

Hey, I was wondering why this article doesn't mention that the Hawk of Quraish (updated with the Green-Black-Red Libyan flag on the shield) is still used by the Libyan Military for rank and cap insignia?
