Grammar: Number agreement

Does anyone else feel that the subject/verb agreement in the first sentence needs revision? Or does "National InstituteS of Health" take the singular?

I believe it is correct as it is. The National Institutes, collectively, comprise the agency reffered to in the first sentence. "Institutes" is plural only nominally; grammatically, "The National Institutes" acts as a single entity and is thus treated with a singular verb. It's kind of like these sentences: "The United States is one hell of a country!" and "The Washington Redskins is a poor football team." :P

Notice the same usage of a singular verb on the official NIH site (http://www.nih.gov/about/; emphasis added): "The National Institutes of Health (NIH), a part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, is the primary Federal agency for conducting and supporting medical research." Institutes

Individual studies

I just removed a section on an individual study here for discussion. The NIH funds a great many studies, and I expect that this section would be better suited to some individual article. - 2/0 (formerly Eldereft) (cont.) 15:53, 4 May 2009 (UTC)

Minor Changes

I admit it, I am currently working at the NIH. I corrected a couple very minor details but I don't believe there are any conflicts of interest. Just a desire to focus the article and add some accuracy. --Jcoireangus (talk) 18:39, 16 July 2009 (UTC)

Moved list of institutes to new article

The list of ICs seemed to take up an disproportionately large portion of the article, so I moved it to a new page: List of Institutes and Centers of the National Institutes of Health... but I accidentally messed up the link title at first. I think I'm going to put in a small embedded list into the article again, just for completeness's sake, but I don't think a full table with all the descriptions and founded dates is needed in this article. — DroEsperanto (talk) 20:28, 2 October 2013 (UTC)

I don't disagree with moving it to a separate article, but there definitely needs to be a prominent link to it in the lead, and right now there isn't one. Klortho (talk) 01:52, 3 October 2013 (UTC)

Adding a section on the NIH Public

I work at the National Institutes of Health, so I haven't made this change directly.

There is a Wikipedia page on the NIH Public Access Policy, but it is not mentioned on the NIH page. I believe that there should be a new section, 3.1 on this as it is a major issue for NIH research. Here is the text I suggest - I would be very grateful if someone could look at this and ideally add a section to the page - here's a suggestion. Thanks for your time!

Public Access Policy

In 2008, a Congressional mandate called for investigators funded by the NIH to submit an electronic version of their final manuscripts to the National Library of Medicine's research repository, PubMed Central (PMC), no later than 12 months after the official date of publication.[1] The NIH Public Access Policy was the first public access mandate for a U.S. public funding agency.[2]

International Organization?

I've noticed places such as Sri Lanka offering similar "National Institutes of Health" or "National Institute of Mental Health", does this mean NIH and append-ant bodies are "International Organizations?" Twillisjr (talk) 14:06, 22 March 2014 (UTC)

They're still national, not federated internationally. They're not even necessarily very similar organizations to a national institute with the same name in another nation. The same thing happens with things like "Medical Research Council." The name may be the same from country to country, but you can't expect that what you know of one, applies to another. Proposed merge with NIH Research Grants

Article deals with technical details, significant third-party coverage (aside from simply mirroring the types of grants) may not exist, per notability requirements. Should be merged as a redirect. --Animalparty-- (talk) 17:57, 2 May 2014 (UTC)

The "Recent Changes Section"

This section requires editing for Neutrality, Style, Grammar, and Factual Accuracy. The style and grammar are incorrect, but I haven't corrected them as they also refer to vague 'concerns' about 'China busily recruiting' NIH/US scientists. This introduces political bias, which also lacks any references, and expresses an unfounded opinion which has nothing to do with recent changes at the NIH.

The author likely wanted to point out 'negative consequences of decreased funding at the NIH,' which could in principle be its own section. Then again, stating that there are negative consequences itself is a bit of an assertion. Certainly there are probably articles which assert various claims of 'brain drain' which is a well-known phenomenon with its own Wikipedia entry - perhaps that could be linked here? Of course you'd have to make sure there's enough evidence of people reporting this to be the case/evidence perhaps?

Grant Information

It is currently very difficult to find information on the different kinds of grants that scientists can apply for under different situations. I have added a link to the overview website (buried fairly deeply, too). Perhaps it would be useful for wikipedia to have a good overview on grants and the application process? Budget table or graph
