Is this true?[edit]

Is this actually true? The article looks poorly made and there is no mention of this so-called "Nazi" in the Sumerian Mythology article. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.152.23.30 (talk) 21:04, 4 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

This most certainly isn't true. Nazi is another name for the goddess Nanshe. While the part about being born to cure Enki's throat illness is correct, the rest-- about being though of as a man or whatever, is sheer fabrication. In the Sumerian composition "Enki and Ninhursag" after Nazi (=Nanshe) was born to cure the throat illness, she is married off to Nindara.

Note the pun in the story:

Ninhursag asks her brother Enki what ails him: "My brother, what part of you hurts you?" He replies: "My throat hurts me." In response, she gives birth to a goddess named Nazi.

The word for throat in Sumerian is "zi" and there is a phonetic relationship between "Nanshe" and "Nazi" (or perhaps "Nassi", with the lengthened sibilant), so that a native scribe would make the association. Other examples in this tale include Ninhursag giving birth to Ninkasi (a goddess of beer) when Enki complains that his mouth hurts. The word for mouth in Sumerian is "ka" so there is a pun here, too.

In all, I'd simply re-direct this entry to Nanshe. 128.84.219.124 (talk) 19:40, 6 August 2011 (UTC) Lance[reply]
