This article is written in American English, which has its own spelling conventions (color, defense, traveled) and some terms that are used in it may be different or absent from other varieties of English. According to the relevant style guide, this should not be changed without broad consensus.
As noted in a footnote on the main page, there is a difference of opinion on Allen's birth date among scholars. Many sources give 1869, but Zaitzevsky gives it as ca. 1874 because of the fact that Allen was listed as six years old in the 1880 census. Since this is the best-attested date that I could find, it is used here. I have not been able to determine where the 1869 date orginates.
