I question the assertion: "Miles was the only man to have served as a commander in the Civil War, the Indian Wars, and the Spanish-American War." Commander of what? I can think off the top of my head of several generals who served in all three wars, most notably Wesley Merritt, who was a corps commander in the ACW, colonel of a cavalry regiment during the Indian Wars, and was initially the ground commander for the invasion of the Philippines during the Spanish-American War. "Commander" can indeed be a vague term...but I cannot think of "several generals who served in all 3 wars". At least not as generals... Merritt aside, Joe Wheeler is the only one I can think of to serve as a General in both the Civil War and the Spanish-American War. (But I understand your point about Miles:)...Engr105th (talk) 09:24, 14 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
