Capitalisation[edit]

Looking at the usage on the netCDF homepage, it seems that the name is written with a capital "N" when English usage would normally call for a capital letter, but a lower case "n" in other places, so I've tried to make the article do the same. TerraGreen 19:06, 13 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It's actually a bit more complicated, see Spelling netCDF: Best Practices from the publisher. The original spelling is "netCDF", whereas "NetCDF" should be used "in titles and at the beginning of sentences, where "netCDF" is awkward or violates style guidelines." The present article shows a mixture of both conventions in use, however I don't see any pressing need to prefer one over the other. +mt 01:24, 8 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

edit you may wish to check[edit]

I added a link to this list of apps just now (though forgot to log in, sorry). I believe that the link improves the article, but I should declare a very slight interest, which is that I wrote a minor app that appears on their list. It is, however, noncommercial, and is just one of many. Scil100 (talk) 17:57, 19 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. That should prove useful A B McDonald (talk) 15:25, 20 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Split Conventions[edit]

I split the Climate and Forecast Metadata Conventions as they are used by other software libraries other than NetCDF.

Split content and history came from the NetCDF article, and work drafted in user space. History of these drafts and changes may be found here:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Markf129/Climate_and_Forecast_Metadata_Conventions

some updates to keep page correct[edit]

As part of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Global Interoperability Project the netCDF team at Unidata has been invited to assist in the documentation of Earth science infrastructure. I am one of the developers of the netCDF C/Fortran/C++ libraries. As new releases come out, the information about data format interoperability changes, and must be updated.

For example, the existing page said that there was no way to read classic and 64-bit offset files with netCDF-4, but this changed in the 4.1.1 release. Now this capability is part of the library. To avoid confusing Wikipedia users with out of date information about the capabilities of the netCDF library, I have made some edits.

Another example: the description of the data format was only applicable to netCDF before version 3.6.0 - which came out several years ago. Since then, the 64-bit offset and the HDF5 formats have been added. (talk) 23:12, 2 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
