You could write a lot more than just a simple listing of athletes, such as the controversy surrounding the selection by NZ Athletics (widely covered in the newspapers and legal action is being taken). Is the kind of thing I'd like to get on to writing, I'll put this page on my watch list. Mathmo Talk 04:48, 2 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I agree. I don't particularly want to get involved with the NZL national selection issues, but it would be nice to note (as an example) that the women's basketball team has satisfied FIBA's qualification requirements with its second-place finish at the FIBA Oceania Championship for Women 2007. -- Jonel (Speak to me) 18:55, 14 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I wonder if it would be worth it. Once the Games are over most of the controversy will be forgotten about. Non-selection has been an issue for 20 years and I for one would be happy to stick the literary knife into the NZOC selectors, BUT...unless the same issues have been covered with regard to previous Games should it really be included here?DerbyCountyinNZ (talk) 04:03, 15 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Redlinks and superfluous information[edit]

Thanks to User:Edged for adding the tables. However I would like to make 2 points, both with respect to WP:Notability and WP:What Wikipedia is not.

1. There is excess information for the Women's Basketball team. Personal statistics should be reserved for the page for the individual. It is inappropriate to include it here when the same has not been done for other team members. If it were this page would become too large and messy. 2. There is no point wikilinking people who have no page and are in fact unlikely to ever have one. Individual pages should be made only for those who are in some way notable, merely making an Olympic team is insufficient.

Unless there is consensus to the contrary I think that this information and the redlinks be removed. Cheers, DerbyCountyinNZ (talk) 00:11, 5 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

"merely" making an olympic team?! any olympian is an amazing achievement, although perhaps it is a little different for team sports vs individuals Mathmo Talk 01:56, 28 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I'm sure that if pages were created for some of the team members, particularly in team sports, the only reason they might be considered notable would be making the team. Is that really enough to justify a page? I know of people whose individual achievements or reasons for notability would exceed that and have had their pages deleted. It is the policy of the Olympic Project to link everybody and even with some larger teams than NZ's there are fewer redlinks. I would prefer that if someone were linked then a page be created for them, however it appears that unfortunately I am in the minority. It is my intention to create pages for NZ Olympians starting from 1908. If anyone else wants to start from 2008 and work backwards we could meet in the middle somewhere! :) Cheers, DerbyCountyinNZ (talk) 03:24, 28 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
