Away strip

Away strip is now blue and red, not all black. When I find out how I'll fix it Neil Leslie 10:12, 8 December 2005 (UTC)

Merger of NZ Nat Team and All Whites

I definitely beleive that 'New Zealand national soccer team' article should be merged with the 'All Whites' article. The best course would to make the 'All Whites' page a redirect to NZ Nat team page I beleive. -ML

I don't think so, because the 'New Zealand national soccer team' doesn't explain the origins of the white strip.

The 'All Whites' and 'New Zealand national soccer team' are exactly the same team so i dont see why they shouldnt be merged.

I've changed the article All Whites to be a redirect, as suggested by ML earlier. Originally I was going to add text along the lines of "The term 'All Whites' sometimes also refers to Swansea RFC" at the top as a compromise, however it appears that the Swansea club officially uses the nickname "The Whites" instead of "All Whites", so no problemo. Likely First Choice Team?

come on, its to show how strong out team could be if we had all our first choice players playing, A lot of people joke about New Zealand at soccer but we could be right up near the 50's in the world rankings or even lower if this team played.

Should 'New Zealand national soccor team be changed to new Zealand national footbal team. Because it says 'New Zealand national football team' in the article it's just the title that says it that way.

Wellington Phoenix flag

I see that in the "Current squad" section, Wellington Phoenix is given the Aussie flag sometimes and the NZ flag other times - it would be nice to have some consistency, and (although they do play in the Australian league), it would probably make more sense if the NZ flag was the one used... The Phoenix are an Australian team, at least as far as football administration is concerned (they will not represent NZ in the O-league, for example), so they should have the Australian flag. For consistency I guess you'd have to check what flag Berwick Rangers' international players are given :-) On the France national team page the French flag is given to AS Monaco. I have not checked what is done with Derry City, and any international players they might have.Neil Leslie 06:12, 19 October 2007 (UTC)

I'm not convinced. Monaco don't have a FIFA-recognised national team, Derry City doesn't seem to have any international players (though one squad member's father was a great international 'keeper). Berwick's status has changed repeatedly over the centuries to the point where many people don't realise it's actually in England (they don't have any international players, either). A better comparison would probably be the use of the Welsh flag for Cardiff City, Swansea City, and Wrexham on Wales national football team, despite them being in the English league and none of them being eligible to compete for Wales in European competitions. Similarly the Canadian flag is used for Toronto F.C. players who play internationally, despite that team playing in a U.S. league. In both the Welsh and Canadian cases, the situation is very similar to NZ - one pro team playing in another country, with only a semi-pro league available at home. I'll have to go with Grutness on this one, Wellington Phoenix should have a NZ flag. This is consistent with Toronto FC players, as well as the before mentioned Welsh teams. м info 04:55, 20 October 2007 (UTC)

The Phoenix are an NZ-based team in an Australian league, which causes tonnes of hassles when it comes to FIFA club status. However since they've signed away the right to play in the AFC Champions League and are currently being positioned to play in the O-League, it sounds like they are officially an Oceanian team, and thus should have an NZ flag. Just a brief note here. Wellington Phoenix are NZ team as a sub-licensee of NZF's A-license. NZF is the licensee and the FFA is the licenser. They play in the A-League as an international team invited from NZ. Although A-League is an Australian administrative competition it can be categorized as an international league as well as that the Wellington Phoenix and the NZF have no voting rights in the FFA because they are not an Australian club. For what it is worth, a quote from the SMH (amongst other places) 28 Nov 2008 [1]:

"But Serepisos claims the club's confused status has already been worked out at the highest levels.

"We have a letter from FIFA, which we got a few months ago, which states we are regarded as an Australian club which resides in New Zealand.

"That's why all our players are registered with the FFA. We've closed the door on competing in Oceania, that's not going to happen. Our future is with Asia, that's what we are pursuing. If we win the league this season, for instance, we expect to be playing in the Asian Champions League. That's our position, and we believe we have the support to do that."

Interesting, but it doesn't really change the position as far as the flag is concerned. Rules were changed in Europe last year when it seemed possible that Cardiff City might win the FA Cup. If they had, they'd have been allowed to represent England in European club competitions, but that wouldn't have made any difference to their club nationality and - as pointed out above - the Welsh flag is still used to represent them. The Phoenix's position is unique because they play in a league in a different confederation, but they're still a team from one country in another country's league, for all that. (FWIW< I think things would be a hell of a lot easier if the AFC and OFC were re-formed into West Asia and East Asia-Pacific... but that's another matter). If the flag is supposed to indicate the nationality of the team and FIFA is the authority on this and the SMH report is accurate then the Australian flag should be used for the Phoenix. But you are free to believe that FIFA is not the authority on this issue, or to deny the accuracy of the SHM report, or to state that the flag is not supposed to represent the nationality of the team. Nationality is important, but location is equally important, and despite the fact that FIFA regard the team as de jure an Australian side, they are without doubt de facto a New Zealand team and are clearly based in New Zealand. And nothing that FIFA's said has anything to do with its location. If Cardiff can represent England (and are therefore de jure an English team), and don't play in the Welsh league, then why have they not got the English flag? Quite simple - it is in Wales and is de facto a Welsh team. An exactly analogous situatiopn occurs here - the only confounding factor is that Australia play in a different confederation. It's not a question of not agreeing with FIFA. It's a question of using whichever flag seems most sensible to use. The club is regarded by FIFA as being an Australian club for the purposes of administration, but I don't think that anyone in FIFA would say that the club is located in Australia, just as I don't think anyone in FIFA would claim that Toronto was in the US or Cardiff was in England. The club cannot both be a club in Wellington and a club in Australia, since Wellington is not in Australia. If you want the club to use the Australian flag, you should also change the flags for Cardiff City, Swansea City, Wrexham, and Toronto FC. I suggest you start similar discussions on the pages relating to those clubs and see how far you get. if you can convince people there that the English and US flags should be used, then fine, the Wellington one should be as well. I don't think you'll have much success, though. Cardiff City may be regarded now as an English side for the purposes of FIFA competition, and is part of the English FA and leagueset-up, but I don't like your chances of try changing the flag on its players. They would almost certainly regard it as highly insulting to do so (as probably, for that matter, would a lot of people if you put the Australian flaag next to Wellington Phoenix). The Welsh flag is used there for an "English" (de jure, but Welsh de jure) club, just as the New Zealand flag should be used here for an "Australian" (de jure, but New Zealand de facto) club. Could we please get a reference on this ? I haven't seen anything official regarding his status, the last word out in the media (that I've seen) being that Ricki was still trying to find a way to get around that rule. However I agree in leaving him off the list until he actually pulls on the silver fern, if ever (though as you've suggested this won't happen). The reference would be for his player page, but I'm asking on this talk page since you brough it up and to expose it to people in the know who have this page on their watchlist. Cheers! Hi Gialloneri, sorry for not getting back to it quick enough, but you won't see any media other than the Yellow Fever Forum (Wellington Phoenix Fan Forum site) about this and very unlikely to see it in the sport page unless there was it was sensational enough or a Billy Harris side comment. Graham Seatter (NZF CEO) made a post on yellow fever forum on 24th sept 2007 addressing his eligibility. Here is the url address. http://www.yellowfever.co.nz/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=1444&KW=&PID=75332#75332. He uses the name "Seatts" to address a few things but everyone knows that it is him. There isn't any media reports on it because it was very pointless to splash it over the papers and does not serve any decent purpose as well as not being sensational enough. The window of opportunity is fully and completely closed for him to apply unless IFA & FIFA conducts a new set of criteria on the player rule, which is unlikely to happen for years.Topsaint 05:32, 9 March 2008 (UTC)

Removing Michael McGlinchey

I am going to remove McGlinchey off the page. He has not applied before his 21st birthday on the 7th Jan 2008 for change of allegiance according to a fan who contact Graham Seatter and Chris Killen and posted his findings. http://www.yellowfever.co.nz/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=4235&KW=McGlinchey&PID=138559#138559 . I think this is genuine. If anything to suggest otherwise please list the reference here but until he actually pulls on the silver fern or the rampant lion or even on tour with either, then he's not on. There has been no talk of him in any team, He would certainly be available for the Oly-Whites because he is good enough for us as a U23. But nothing is seen so everything is seems to be true. I umm'ed and ah'ed about Nelson and couldn't decide. Was only going to include him because he is well know mostly through his Blackburn situation, but does that really qualify him as notable from a NZ national team standpoint? Simply being professional is not significantly notable - if it were, nearly every internatuional on the planet would end up in the notable players list. ditto Killen. Grant Turner has 71 appearances, but only 42 caps where caps are A-internationals - the others being against non-international competition (Bournmouth, S'hampton, nz selections etc., similarly Kenny Cresswell with only 33 true caps. OK, good point about Turner and Cresswell - their articles listed them all as caps, IIRC (wither that or I misread "appearances" as meaning full caps). Still think that the prominence of both Nelsen and Killen is enough though. The information starting from FIFA World Cup and up to & including All Time Record is a great source of information, but I feel it clutters up the page and makes it seem less like an encyclopedia article and more like a database. How does everyone else feel about having all of this information on New Zealand national football team results, with some information (heavily abridged) remaining on the main page? Caps and Goals

Beneath the current squad there is a not "Caps and goals accurate as of (date)" with a reference provided as [2]. However, these caps and goals are not accurate in the sense that they are all appearances for the All Whites including unofficial internationals against club sides and select XIs. 2 other sources I know of for finding the information are Ultimate NZ Soccer which is accurate but lags behind a little, and RSSSF which is a better source but also lacks up to date info. An example: Campbell Banks, listed by NZFootball as having 6 caps and 2 goals can bee seen at RSSSF to have played 6 matches in 2006, but only 3 were full internationals - 1 against Malaysia and 2 against Chile. The other 3 games were against Charlton, Blackburn and Sevilla which do not count as full internationals for infobox statistics purposes. This is also borne out by Jeremy Ruane's] site which lists full line-ups overall stats and goals. Vicelich is listed by NZ football as having his debut against Denmark U-23, also not a full international.--ClubOranje^T 08:59, 4 June 2009 (UTC)

Addition of New Section

Im suggesting a new section or paragraph in the development section devoted to the van Hattum family and their contributions to the sport. Im just wondering whether this is worthy enough for this page and what everyone else thinks about it. These are the basic reasons below:

· Fritz van Hattum came to NZ in 1952 and pretty much introduced football to Taranaki. [3]

· Marie-Jose Cooper and Grazia Macintosh (daughters of Fritz) played for the womens all whites team

· Frank van Hattum, Son of Fritz and Brother of Marie-Jose and Grazia played for NZ 28 times including all three world cup matches in Spain, 1982. In 2008 he also became Chairman of NZF and has transformed it into what it is today (it was virtually bankrupt in 2008 and now were in the World Cup). Theres more to this recovery which is actually pretty spectacular but ill have to find some supporting articles.

Nicolas van Hattum, grandson of Frits (typically spelt with a "s" not a "z", he's Dutch, not German) won the Chatham Cup with Wellington Olympic in 2009. However, I'm not sure this would really be the right page for it - this should really only have significant things directly related to the national side. It's an impressive family link, but - by way of comparison - the Black Caps' article doesn't list the connections of the Hadlee and Snedden families, which are equally strong. Mr Hall of England, the idea was to wait until we have some sort of consensus here among the regular editors of this page as to which they would prefer. At the moment it is your word against mine in terms of what looks and works better which has only led to an editing war.

Your changes to the Managers table are actually quite good so that should stay. However, your other additions and layout changes do not help with the ease of reading or aesthetic quality at all. Eg. There is absolutely no need to include the World Cups that NZ never entered into, nor the future World Cups where qualification has not begun. Same applies to the Confederations Cup table. It is pointless information that takes up space for no reason.

The OFC Nations Cup table also looks messy and squashed, and also includes two columns that deliver the same information; 'Round' and 'Position'.

I am not against your addition of the squads and managers to the World cup and Confederation Cup tables, however, I don't think it is the appropriate place to put those links.

Results and fixtures section

Recently Mr Hall of England changed the Results and fixtures section in this edit. It was the second time he reverted my edit of the section, so I wanted to discuss it. I personally thin this version best suits the article. I don't think there is reason to have the results from the last 8 years on this article when there is a dedicated article (New Zealand national football team results) on the subject. I think displaying the direct past years results and current years results (i.e. currently 2012 and 2013) is sufficient for the purpose of the article, and if the reader wishes for information on prior results, there is a link displayed for that.--2nyte (talk) 15:02, 10 October 2013 (UTC)

I agree with this. The last two or three years is all that is needed on this page, or the current World Cup cycle at the most (which would range from 2012-2014 this time around). I must disagree Edwina Jones and Ryk72, considering the group has their own section at games and is clearly backed by NZ Football its self, there should be a section in the article on them. You can find a number of references to them [4][5][6][7](and that was just a quick google of recent articles). Sure the group is run by people from the Yellow Fever, but that is how groups work. It's soccer in NZ

In Australia and New Zealand, association football is called soccer (as well as in the US, Japan, South Africa, Canada, Papua New Guinea, etc). And the article Australian national football team, the term soccer is used. So I think we should on the New Zealand article too, because whether the Football Federation calls it that or not, people call it soccer to distinguish it from other codes of football (i.e rugby and AFL). No, it's football in NZ and has been since May 2007. The national organisation is called NZ football. All the regional organisations are football Capital Football (New Zealand), Central Football (New Zealand), Auckland Football Federation Northern Football Federation. While some people may still use soccer as a form of distinguishing the difference to what sport they are talking about.
