Main Picture[edit]

Is this seriously the only picture that anyone found of Main Street Newark? I got to say it is a very bad one. Should be replaced with something not as depressing as that one looks. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 128.175.29.4 (talk) 00:05, 23 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

University of Delaware[edit]

University of Delaware has seven academic colleges that offer degrees. Majors and minors are administered through these units that report to the deans of the colleges. There is also great dining on Main St for students to enjoy.

I removed this for two reasons

  1. This is an article about Newark, not the University of Delaware. Information about how many degrees UD offers and such is not relevant to this article and belongs on the UD article.
  2. There is also great dining on Main St for students to enjoy "Great dining" is an opinion.

University of Delaware Current Paragraph[edit]

I think the current paragraph is problematic too, it's, again, talking about the degree programs and the ranking of the college. I think a lot (possibly a larger section than the current paragraph) belongs on this page, because the University is really the major player in the town...it drives most of the town's business and economy, etc. But this is a page on the town--so the paragraph needs to talk about the relationship between the town and the university--it needs to talk about the university from the PERSPECTIVE of the town. It currently doesn't do this at all...that section is like an unrelated summary of the university with a "oh by the way it happens to be in this town" remark. Points of Interest[edit]

I removed these: * Extremely large parking problem * Horribly weak and misguided police force, because while they may be true (or not), there are no wikipedia pages on those topics. They are subjects that might be worth adding to the article itself. Not sure that they fit in a section labeled "Points of Interest" which appear to be geographical locations rather thatn "items" of interest. Bill Slawski 05:42, 18 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Documenting E.A.Poe, the college murder, the warlock of paper mill road[edit]

Edgar Allen Poe's famous curse ("all that come here shall return"), supposedly uttered while waiting for a train after being ejected from the Saint Patrick's Inn (now the Deer Park Tavern) for drunkenness, is difficult to document, but so widely known in the area that it is rightfully included in the town's description. The college prank gone bad that resulted in a murder and the closing of the University of Delaware is well documented, along with the "Warlock" story, in the 1885 paper-bound "History of Newark Delaware", which also includes the text of the original town charter.

As for Poe's curse, the article calls it a "legend". So I belive that all that must be verified is the existence of the legend, not its accuracy. I have put a citation to the Deer Park tavern's own history page which also quotes the legend. Philhower (talk) 19:07, 15 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Cleaning Up Notables[edit]

The only connection that a lot of the people listed in the "Notables" section is that they attended the University of Delaware. That is a tenuous claim to the town at best. Should these names be deleted from the list?Wkharrisjr (talk) 17:08, 17 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I agree - they can be included in List of University of Delaware people and the appropriate University of Delaware category instead. You may want to add a link from this article to List of University of Delaware people too. GoingBatty (talk) 18:12, 17 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
