Gyalwang Drukpa / Gyalwang Drukchen[edit]

To avoid confusion in this article I have used "Gyalwang Drukchen" to refer to the incarnations of Tsangpa Gyare. Other sources sometimes use "Gyalwang Drukpa" to refer to the same lamas - however Bhutanese sources use "Gyalwang Drukpa" to refer to all the throne holders in the hereditary lineage of Tsangpa Gyare (and later for Bhutanese rulers) while "Gyalwang Drukchen" is only used for the incarnations of Tsangpa Gyare. Current Shabdrung[edit]

I removed the following essay-like text which was recently inserted into the end of the article by 117.200.113.10 in India, who purports to be a lama and a citizen (of Bhutan?). There are absolutely no references provided, however I thought this would be a good place for the content until the English is cleaned up and the claims are cited.

The boy born in eastern bhutan was recognized as the reincarnation of former Shabdrung Rinpoche(exil in India, manali) by the team of Sangha from Druk Ngawang Thupten Choling Monastery, Bodhagaya under the guidence given by H.H. Karmapa and Chochong(Oracle)at the age of two. After the boy was entrone with all auspicious ceremony at monastery , and was supported by H.H. Kyabje Nezer Tulku, Takna Rinpoche, Tsoni Rinpoche and many important figure Lamas. But later govt. of Bhutan accuse Khenpo Tshokyi of being claiming Tulku of Shabdrung Rinpoche. Later govt neither deny nor accepted the a boy as reincarnation of Shabdrung Rinpoche. The govt non officially pressure khenpo Tshokyi to get back the boy to Bhutan. Khenpo after discussing with senior monks and collecting the advices of other lay man members decided to take back young Rinpoche to Bhutan. The Indian govt and state govt gave the utmost consideration to the young Rinpoche and was escorted with police pilots upto Bhutan. As being not recognized as the reincarnation of Shabdrung Rinpoche by Govt of Bhutan, there was no any special reception nor any higher official at the reception. Although not accepted but still put special eye on his movements.as rinpoche father being a teacher was tranfered to Chirang district which far the Thimphu, After repeated request he is now back to Thimphu School. The young Rinpoche is admitted to one of private schơl as a ordinary boy. The parents are happy by seeing the govt change policy towards young Rinpoche. Young Rinpoche is allowed to travel within Bhutan but have strict restriction to travel out side Bhutan. This restriction is non official as there is no legal proof and it is legal restriction because it is strict order given by higher security person and high govt official of home ministry. So whole country and world is watching to see where young Rinpoche's future goes. He is now eight years now. His monastery seriously worried as it is high time to give him education and monastic training, Khenpo and monks are dissapointed and helpless as they are true citizen of Bhutan and strongly aspiring to benefit the country. On contrary it is their responsibilities as they are the one who take care Rinpoche,s monks and monasteries in Pedong, and Dolopchen at Kalimpong, Bodhgaya, Manali, Ladakh. They feel responsible as they sincerely work hard and followed the prophesy to select the young Rinpoche, and need to train him. By supporting Rinpoche's cause or having respect and faith to Rinpoche, no citizen is trying to go against TSAWASUM. They love their KING, COUNTRY,GOVT and PEOPLE. Iam another citizen who is trying to share the truth of this cause. Iam not claiming a young boy as Shabdrung Rinpoche's tulku nor I deny it. This is picture based on truth. Thruth is always easy to find out. Lama Khezol Rinchen

The gist is: 1) the incarnation was named and enthroned; 2) the government takes no official position and the political office of shabdrung no longer exists; 3) the government remains wary of incarnations; 4) the incarnation's biological father has faced negative repercussions; 5) the incarnation remains under house arrest. As for assertions surrounding specific instances, names of individuals, and support of followers, these should all be cited, backed up, and cleaned up, but I'm not able to find much right now.

I realized whatever can be gleaned from this still won't belong on this page. Any useful information belongs on the Shabdrung page. This is the page for the first incarnation. JFHJr () 23:57, 5 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Requested move 20 October 2014[edit]

Shabdrung Ngawang NamgyalZhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal – The official romanisation standard for Dzongkha as well as the wikipedia page Zhabdrung Rinpoche about this individual use "Zhabdrung". It seems prudent - and more accurate - to move the page. --Relisted. Dekimasuよ! 03:18, 27 October 2014 (UTC) Ogress smash! 13:03, 20 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

First Citation[edit]

Hi all, Just tried following the links on the first citation and they're all dead. Anyone have a source I could use? Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 173.48.248.78 (talk) 15:21, 20 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@173.48.248.78: I don't want to sound snarky, but if you are talking about "Formation of the State of Bhutan ('Brug gzhung) in the 17th Century and its Tibetan Antecedents", I just googled that and immediately hit the updated page on THLIB. I went ahead and fixed it on the main page itself but here's the address for your convenience: http://www.thlib.org/static/reprints/jbs/JBS_11_02.pdf Ogress smash! 17:15, 21 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

History[edit]

Ngawang Namgyal (later granted the honorific Zhabdrung Rinpoche, approximately "at whose feet one submits") (Tibetan: ཞབས་དྲུང་ངག་དབང་རྣམ་རྒྱལ་, Wylie: zhabs drung ngag dbang rnam rgyal; alternate spellings include Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyel; 1594–1651) and known colloquially as The Bearded Lama, was a Tibetan Buddhist lama and the unifier of Bhutan as a nation-state. In addition to unifying the various warring fiefdoms for the first time in the 1630s, he also sought to create a distinct Bhutanese cultural identity separate from the Tibetan culture from which it was derived. 119.2.125.148 (talk) 12:05, 7 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
