What is the latin species name for Nguni cattle?

Indigenous?[edit]

The opening line describes nguni cattle as an indigenous breed but then says the breed is a hyrbid of indigenous and Indian cattle. Is this still indigenous? Brooksmith's (talk) 16:17, 17 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Nguni cattle were always described as Bos indicus. But these days are described as Bos taurus africanus which research shows is more accurate.

Need clarification in Characteristics section[edit]

"All different combinations were catalogued in the beginning of the century by a South African herdmaster." Which century? Cognita (talk) 20:33, 6 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Nguni peoples, presence[edit]

Nguni presence in South Africa precedes 600 CE so explain how does their source of food not correlating with their presence as by valid evidence they introduced these species in what's now South Africa, this is dubious or misinformation. Their completion of migration even precedes 600 CE, at the latest end of it is 500 CE, then someone comes and says 600 CE-1400 CE Nguni cattle came about, not even in South Africa but Southern Africa, which is worse because presence of Bantu speakers in Southern Africa is as old as before 300 BCE. Knowledge destruction[edit]

User:Justlettersandnumbers xyz has simply deleted the following passage here with the comment about missing evidence:
"Since then, these animals have played an important social and economic role in the development of these societies and are used as a bride's lobola. The number of animals held by a village or individual determined much of their importance to the rest of the world. King Shaka of the Zulus understood this cultural and economic importance and seized control of the Nguni herds on his dominions. Shaka also bred the Ngunis according to color patterns to produce hides for the several regiments of his army, henceforward recognised by them. His elite personal guard was recognised by pure white, from animals of the royal herd, the "inyonikayiphumuli"".
However, this information sounds very plausible and truthful. To simply let it disappear is damaging to the project and borders on vandalism.
For such cases there are several ways to get information until someone has found and added evidence for this statement:
- First, one can insert a module about missing sources at this point. This is a common and widely used solution in WP.
- Second, one can comment out the passage in the source with a short note about the missing source.
- Third, you can copy the passage to the discussion page with a note about the missing source.
Really good and professional users, however, go and research a reference themselves and add it. Unfortunately, my English language skills are not sufficient to do that here.--Bestoernesto (talk) 16:32, 18 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Bestoernesto, you are of course right – in an ideal world we would track down the source of every statement that's ever been added to Wikipedia (if there is one). In practice, the WP:BURDEN is on the person who adds the content to also provide the references. Whenever you edit page here you see a message that reads "Content that WP:Copyright violations|violates any copyrights]] will be deleted. Encyclopaedic content must be verifiable through citations to reliable sources". When I removed that content in September 2020 it had been sitting here unsourced for 16 years (it was added by User:Muriel Gottrop~enwiki with this edit in May 2004).

I believe that there are about 14000 domestic animal breeds listed in DAD-IS; I spend quite a lot of my time here trying to improve our articles on those. I'm sorry that I haven't yet got round to expanding this one. If you'd like to identify sources that support the content I removed, I will try to add them to the page; it doesn't matter if they aren't in English.
