A better Nick Diaz intro (September 2020)[edit]

So Nick and his brother Nathan (better known as "Nate") are two of the most well-known MMA fighters, and I want to include more context in Nick's intro that will better explain to wiki's visitors who Nick is, and why he is notable. The previous intro noted only his Championship belts; but this is very insufficient. I wanted to include a few key points about not just how well he is known, but why he is well known, in no particular order:

  • # His introverted, outspoken and moody personality
  • His disregard for the mechanisms the UFC provided for stability and for the promotion of fights
  • His fighting style based around cardio, BJJ and Boxing, which is fairly unique but comparable to fighters like Tony Ferguson
  • His relationship to Nathan Diaz, his younger brother, who has achieved mainstream success
  • A statement on his popularity, which while not quite "mainstream" is certainly notable, akin to a cult film.

I am not an excellent writer but I attempted to introduce these key points in the following intro:

"Nickolas Robert "Nick" Diaz (born August 2, 1983) is an American mixed martial artist. Since the beginning of his career in 2001, Diaz has competed in UFC, PRIDE, Strikeforce, EliteXC, World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC), DREAM, and Shooto. He is a former welterweight champion in Strikeforce, WEC, and IFC. Known for his outspoken, introverted personality and anti-hero persona outside of the ring, Nick, along with his younger brother Nathan was also known for developing a pressure-fighter style that used his excellent Boxing, Brazilian jiu-jitsu, cardio and nearly unbreakable Chin to exhaust and overwhelm his opponents. Together, the Diaz brothers rose to become two of the most popular fighters in MMA history and are some of the most decorated and popular UFC fighters to have never won a championship belt.[4]"

The citation I used was a Fightland by Vice article by Jack Slack, the relatively well-known author, historian and youtuber. Jack is probably best known for his book "Notorious: The Life and Fights of Conor McGregor" but I find his film breakdowns much more interesting. I don't think there is a fighting sports author that is as thorough and yet approachable as Jack Slack.

Hi. Thanks for starting the conversation. I would suggest that any information that you add (with WP:RS) is placed in its suitable place within the article. The intro / lead/ lede is not the place. It's used instead briefly to summarise key points, which are then fleshed out and sourced within the article. NEDOCHAN (talk) 19:00, 5 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, it is there to summarize key points, but the current intro fails to do so. As mentioned, it doesn't adequately describe diaz, his notoriety, or why people care about him. "Intro" is of course short for "introduction", and the introduction as is does not adequately introduce Nick Diaz. Additionally, if intros were supposed to be ultra-minimalist, then the intros for almost any other athlete and person would have to be revised; for example, Shaquille O'Neal's intro mentions his stature, rap and producing history, even though those things have nothing to do with his basketball career. We must then describe not just what diaz was, but also why he mattered, and people don't know him for his championship run, they know him for his fighting style, personality and so on. ~~PrivateHazzard~~

How can one even begin to soundly justify that they have been one of the biggest influences in the sport? I’ll rep 209, and it will always be 1,2,5 in nicks favor, but that statement is just not true. Ramahamalincoln (talk) 14:28, 24 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

New weight edit with note[edit]

The weight is 185 since his last fight was at 185, 170 in the notes anyways so why revert it . It’s in the notes and the Sherdog source is there . Don’t see why would you feel the need to revert . It’s the same situation with Dan Henderson’s height . It’s better to have a note with all possible reliable sources and avoid an edit war , also included the ufc fight cards where he was listed at both 170 and 185 — Preceding unsigned comment added by Wikiman122112 (talkcontribs) 11:30, 29 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

My fellow wiki editor , what are you doing ? Why revert back his weight without saying anything , let’s reach a new consensus here , his listed weight should be 185 since his last fight before leaving the ufc was at 185, all the sources are there to support this . Please discuss I would like to know more Wikiman122112 (talk) 13:38, 29 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
i agree now is a good time to change the weight . according to the user cassiopeia "For the weight issue here, we normally use Sherdog.com to information can be found in Sherdog.com fighter page for the infobox section. Any inform that cant be found from Sherdog will be taken from other source. As for the weight, we always put the weight class of the last fight of the fighter fought" so i think this is pretty clear now on how the weight should be in this article , sherdog hasn't updated the weight which should be 185 since his last fight was at 185 and just like you did (nedochan) to the mcgregor page , an espn source is added Legendstreak0 (talk) 10:14, 23 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
You are talking to yourself. Diaz was a welterweight.NEDOCHAN (talk) 10:27, 23 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I've struck through the comment of a blocked sockpuppet. See Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Wikiman122112. – 2.O.Boxing 20:07, 25 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Nick diaz latest fight should be a referee stoppage, a retirement tko is when a fighter cannot answer the bell on the stool. This was not answering to the ref thus a referee stoppage

Not done for now: please establish a consensus for this alteration before using the {{edit semi-protected}} template. Sources are referring to this as a retirement tko. ScottishFinnishRadish (talk) 12:05, 28 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
