PEN/Oakland Award[edit]

How should the fact of his winning be phrased? The award is given to several novelists each year, as opposed to the unique winner for best novel that is much more typical. The versions I come up with either explain the award (which is what the link is for), make it seem that 2004 was special in awarding several people, or the present version which makes it seem he beat everybody else to the prize.
