Sources for future article expansion[edit]

  • Eldridge, Robert D. (2014), Iwo Jima and the Bonin Islands in U.S.–Japan Relations: American Strategy, Japanese Territory, and the Islanders In-Between (PDF), Quantico: Marine Corps University Press.

This is extremely thorough and well done (at least through the first part and especially for a jarhead xD) and should probably be used to correct, improve, and expand all the Nanpo Island articles.

There's also more at the official Ogasawara Village website, now included for two specific points. The alt names are now getting expansive and obnoxious enough they can probably be helpfully moved to a separate #Names section. Cf. Iwo Jima#Name (since it's only focused on the forms of the single one). — LlywelynII 07:45, 27 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

They were Lt. Cmdr. Scott A. Zellem, 35, of Indiana, Pennsylvania; Lt. Patrick S. Myrick, 31, of Seattle; Lt. James J. Pupplo, 34, of Selden, New York; and Petty Officer 2nd Class Joshua B. Showalter, 24, of Fontana, California.

With all due respect for their service and loved ones, the age, location, and even names of these men are less important than those who died on Iwo Jima and we're not about to start listing them on the main island page either. It's possible they're notable here if they're the only people known to be buried on the island but it seems both extremely likely their remains were returned to America and extremely unlikely no Micronesians or Japanese ever died and were buried on the island during their years of residence. If this was a truly NOTABLE crash, create an article on it and link from here. — LlywelynII 12:47, 25 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I can't comment on notability of the crash, but here is a source that may suffice, if this section is to be kept: https://www.stripes.com/branches/navy-holds-memorial-service-for-aviators-killed-in-s-3b-viking-crash-1.23388. It also reports on efforts to recover remains. This site specifies the final resting place of each of the crew: https://pacificwrecks.com/aircraft/s-3/160567.html 216.24.45.42 (talk) 18:29, 30 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
