Split article[edit]

While the league website itself may claim that it was founded in 1902, the modern Northern League is completely independent of the original Northern League and its derivatives (1902-71). It is merely the revival of a classic league name for the region, much like American Association (21st century). As such, I believe that each incarnation should be contained in a separate article. Unfortunately I was away so I did not see this. But I think it should be combined. Because not only did they use the same league name. A number of the teams used the same names and atleast one of the team owners was the same. --Djsasso 00:47, 17 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

True, however as I noted in my split, there have actually been six leagues that used this name. The modern Northern League took its name from a historical league in the same region. Similaraly, several teams used historic names from past incarnations. This is common throughout all of North American sport. However, the modern Northern League is functionally independent of the previous five. Its only tie is historical usage. Resolute 04:36, 17 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It is simply a PR move that the current Northern League sets its founding (and occasionally its batting and pitching records) all the way back to the founding of the original league, using the rationalization that some of its teams in 1993 also were part of the original incarnations. If we merely go on the fact that it has the same name, then the current American Association goes back to 1882.Couillaud 14:46, 21 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Cities without other teams?[edit]

It operates in cities not served by Major or Minor League Baseball teams and is not affiliated with either.

Okay, I get the idea that the specific municipalities the Northern League teams play in have no other baseball teams of any kind, but that would be the case with the vast the majority of baseball teams at all levels. The Northern League's entire South Division play in metropolitan areas with major league teams; in fact, three of them play in the Chicago area! I'm not objecting cause I believe the wording is a hold over from when it was very obviously true. But I do want to make note that those teams are close to cities with major league teams but they are not IN the cities with major league teams. Logos "Non-Free"?[edit]

The team logos were recently removed from this page, citing Wikipedia's "Non-Free Content" guidelines, but it seems to me that a reading of the guidelines allows such usage, providing that care is taken and it is noted that these are copyrighted logos. I think it benefits the article to use the team logos, just as it does in using the league's logo.

Opinions?

I went through this about a year ago with the other members of the ice hockey wikiproject over other league articles. It seems that Wikipedia, being a free content encyclopedia, wants to limit non-free images as much as possible. With that in mind, the current standard for sports team logos is to include them only on the team article, or an article that is specifically referencing the logo. It is believed that including team logos on the league page is "decoration", which is disallowed under WP:FU. The standard seems to be that league articles show only the league logo, and team articles on the team logo. Resolute 22:06, 31 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Golden League?[edit]

Has anyone heard the rumors of the edmonton cracker-cats and the calgary vipers moving off to the golden league to reduce travel costs? this has been in the calgary herald, the edmonton journal, and the Winnipeg Sun for quite some time now. TelusFielder 17:46, 4 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I have been reading of it in the Northern League forums, but all that has been quoted are newspaper speculations. There have been no formal announcements, and not even statements from either team or either league giving credence to the stories as possibilities. By this point on the calendar two years ago, the breakaway by the four teams that formed the AA (St. Paul, Lincoln, Sioux City, and Sioux Falls) was virtually an accomplished fact. If we're still in the rumor phase now, it's unlikely that it would happen before the start of the 2008 season. The rumors might be worth reporting in this article, but IMO they should be identified as rumors and nothing else. --Couillaud
