"Male, female and pup"[edit]

Shouldn't that read, "Female, pup and beach master"? Because otherwise the photo might convey the idea that they're a happy little family, which is somewhat removed from the truth, seeing that harems can contain 30 to 100 cows (as the article does state). "...the younger, less capable males are simply chased away, often to upland dunes, where they will rest up and contemplate their martial strategy for the next year."

-I thought that should be "marital" as it's talking about acquiring a mate. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Aksel89 (talkcontribs) 22:52, 20 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

To be fair, the whole tone of that is wrong. They don't contemplate their strategy for the following year at all. They don't have a strategy beyond be big and intimidating. I will remove it. Sabine's Sunbird talk 22:59, 20 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Range Map[edit]

The range map is incorrect based on our current knowledge of northern elephant seal ecology. Two corrections are required: 1. Some breeding occurs as far north as southern Vancouver Island. 2. The non-breeding range is only correct for males, the feeding range of females extends westward off of the continental shelf, as far west as Hawaii. US breeding colonies (rookeries)[edit]

Article currently states: "Significant breeding colonies exist at Channel Islands, Año Nuevo State Reserve, Piedras Blancas Light, Morro Bay State Park and the Farallon Islands in the US...."

I live in SLO County & am interested (and somewhat knowledgeable) about these seals. I'm almost certain there is no rookery in Morro Bay State Park. The Piedras Blancas rookery continues to expand. --2600:6C52:7800:C34:159B:BB6D:B1D9:559 (talk) 15:54, 28 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
