Attendance Figures[edit]

If the numbers given are correct and there were always less than 1 million people at the Notting Hill carnival over the last years it is not the biggest street festival in Europe. I find the claim that this carnival is "second to Rio" to be anedoctal. Rio de Janeiro (the city) carnival is only one of the several big carnivals of Brazil. Virtual Interactive Streetscapes not useful?[edit]

Virtual Interactive Streetscapes not useful?

I would like to appeal yesterday's removal of the link Virtual Notting Hill Carnival from this page. Up until yesterday the link had proved exceptionally useful to Wikipedia visitors for months and had taken them onto the world's only hi-res Virtual Interactive Streetscape complete with carnival sounds, to discover more about this road. What better way to research a street than to walk along it thanks to Wikipedia from anywhere in the world! (Boy I wish my Children's Britannica Encyclopedias had miles of virtual streetscapes when I was a kid!)

Would you be able to agree that Wikipedia users researching a city or street would find a virtual streetscape effictively allowing them to walk down that city's street useful? Is that not within the spirit of Wikipedia? This site is also recommended by the local Council's own short and carefully picked list of links.

If this is not agreed, then it raises the issue of contradicting the previous editors who felt this was within the spirit of the site, and which led to the link being in place for months. We then have a question of inconsistency and removing useful content from users.

  • It seems like the two main reasons the link was removed were that the site seems overly commercial and it has very little relevence to the Notting Hill Carnival itself, merely a street that it passes through. As for consistency, we have never been consistent in keeping content deemed to be not relevent to an aricle. What wikipedia IS consistent on is removing spam from its article.     • I'm afraid I have to agree with the removal of this link. I think that it would be justified if the link was placed in an article about Portobello Road or Notting Hill Gate, but it doesn't have anything to do with the carnival itself. Best, Madder 21:57, 9 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Carnival or The Carnival[edit]

I've just removed "the" from mentions of "the Carnival" as I have mainly seen it written as Carnival. However, looking through some of the links on the article page I notice a creeping tendency for "the Carnival" to be used and accepted. My understanding is that "Carnival" is correct, while "the Carnival" is not ("the carnival" is OK). Does anyone have any views on this? Murders[edit]

A number of people have been murdered at the Carnival - one of whom in 2000 was a Pakistani (Abdul Bhatti, who was attacked by 40-50 youths after defending a friend who was being robbed) which was treated as racially motivated- although many appear to have been motiveless and no convictions have been made. Another man was stabbed to death on the same day called Greg Watson The article says that the Carnival is now "seen as peaceful"- perhaps because of the massive level of policing, but this is largely because it suits politicians to present it as such. In 2004 Lee Surbaran was shot dead at point blank range for showing "disrespect". Three youths were convicted Deputy Police Commissioner Steve House said " It is inevitable that this tragic event will cast a shadow over the Carnival. However, thousands of people attended what was otherwise a highly enjoyable celebration of vibrant costumes music and dancing and all parties agreed that this was an extremely good natured event". In 1987 Michael Galvin - a stallholder, was knifed to death. I could only source this from some disgusting Fascist websites and an anarchist one (which seemed to almost in favour) as Galvin in particular appears to have been erased from mention -having nobody especially to speak up for him. It is hypocrisy and POV to applaud the Carnival for promoting peace and harmony and yet to ignore five murders as though they never happened. At least their victims (2 black, 2 white and one Asian) are racially diverse. If you cram a million people into a restricted place (which happens to be where I live) and encourage them to drink as much alcohol as possible then this is what happens. 2008[edit]

There have been a number of different reports as to the numbers of arrests and what for. It appears that a firearm was not found, but a tazer. (Where do they get these things?). 400 is on the high side and may include those who were prevented from attending by being detained at the Oval,although on what legal grounds is difficult to say. Other people were arrested in raids leading up to the Carnival. I would suggest that there is no news blackout as these things have been widely covered. The latest account on 27 August 2008 is from the Metro newspaper, ("Notting Hill rioters go on rampage")which gives the figures as 850,000 attending, 330 people arrested, up from 237 last year, and 573 crimes reproted from 537 last yeasr. The article also says that a 40 strong mob were able to fight the police for 2 hours at Ladbroke Grove. given the number of police in evidence (11,000 last year)I find this hard to believe that the mob was not larger, unless the police were especially useless. So perhaps we can go with these figures ? I do not share the agenda about black people that seems to be developing here- it also appears that large numbers of white people think that they can behave as they apparently do in various parts of the Mediterranean each summer and treat locals as though they are some kind of occupying force who have no right to live where they are intent on getting tanked up. Nonetheless, the Notting Hill Carnival is no longer the community street festival it claims to be, but heavily supported by the Establishment, who seek to minimise its anti-social aspects, even to the extent of downplaying racially motivated murder, in apologising if the odd murder might spoil people's enjoyment of a fun day of eating barely hygienic food, drinking heavily and promiscuous urinating.--Streona (talk) 10:04, 27 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Loud music was initially played 24 hours a day, in about 1981. Then, the Police asked for it to be turned down after 10 p.m.

Listing the people who died???[edit]

just wondering why the need to have a large last. Its sad that people died, and the foolish way that they did. But I dont see any other festival pages on Wikipedia drawing up a list of people who died at the event.

Are there detailed lists for the people who die at other concerts, Hyde Park, Redding Festival and the tons during the summer in UK???

Edit:As a serving police officer at Notting Hill throughout the 1970s I can state categorically that police involvement was never to try and stop the carnival regardless of permission to hold the event being granted or otherwise. It was always going to happen. What police wanted was to reduce the number of crimes committed under cover of the event. It has to be said they only achieved this aim by massaging the figures, sadly. Hundreds upon hundreds of empty wallets being recorded as 'property found in the street', rather than 'property involved in crime'. Not one year has passed without police being attcked and injured by missile throwing youths and yet, year after year, this is concealed by the Government and senior police spokespersons alike. The very first police injury I witnesed was in 1975 to Chief Inspector Craven of Notting Hill Police Staion, who was standing on a chair appealling for calm. He lost a section of his ear to a thrown housebrick. Not a year has passed without police injuries, including two attempted murders of police officers, both known to me and injuries witnessed by me.

Attendance figures again[edit]

Hello, came here looking for an accurate figure on attendance as I've been seeing a vague "two million" number online.
