Why has the mention of the drug turf war been deleted? Is a number of 120 murders per half year not significant for a city? --Keimzelle 12:45, 15 October 2005 (UTC)

As a native of Nuevo Laredo, I am upset over your reference, as a SUBSET of the topic of the city, to "Boystown." Why is this print-worty, at least enough to be part of an encyclopedia? While true that the city has dedicated a section of the city to legalized prostitution, the reference perpetuates stereotypes from adventurous "Americanos" whose only purpose in visiting a Mexican border town is to "get laid" at a bargain price. Your closing comment that "if you want a good sexual encounter for a real good deal, visit Boy's Town, where you will find very beautiful young ladies that can make your day unforgetable," sounds more than an ad by a call-girl service, than a respectable source of information, as I assume this site to be. A similar treatment in the Washington D.C. section, would be to end it by announcing that it is a place where you can get good "crack" cocaine, relatively easy, and right in front of the White House (remember?).

Nuevo Laredo is not glamorous, and yes, barren of mountains, lakes, or beaches, and suffers from some of the hottest temperatures of any North American city (yes, Mexico is part of North America). Most "Neolaredenses" prefer to think of it as a place without floods, seismic activity, volcano eruptions, freezes (except for the miraculous snow flurry received on Christmas two years ago), or threat of tsunamis. For those who see beyond the usual trashy references to the Mexican border, it possesses a distinct beauty that is representative of the region; a mix of highly accented, and contrasting Mexican and American values, despite being only separated by a river, while extremely co-dependent for economic survival; an even more difficult to understand divide between the foods served on each side, and the realization by most Americans that to eat well, well, you have to "go across"; and without question, and very much a topic of legitimate interest, the current and sad drug-related upsurge in violence, which has taken all of those not involved in it (the overwhelming majority of the citizens)hostage, in a literally lawless setting, now referred to as "Little Baghdad." This subject could be expanded, as it is sure to cause more concern as the days go by.

Drinks: Vampiros (sangrita, tequila, grapefruit juice); Clamatos (beer with Clamato Juice, lemon, Worsestershire sauce, salt); Micheladas (beer and Mexican lemon (not key lime) on ice -- or Cubanas, with chile pepper);

Caldo de Mariscos (sea food soup): Rio Mar; El Marinero; Mandinga;

Other: A great place, and still a great deal to have your vehicle repaired for body damage, as most work is done by hand, with little "Bondo,"; A great place to have your vehicle worked on by knowledgeable, experienced old-school mechanics (Tony's Garage by Bridge # 2) who do not simply connect to a computer like at most dealers, and will charge a lot less;

The yearly "Expomex" exposition, with artisans, carnival rides, a cockfighting rink with popular artists (Vicente Fernandez, Antonio Aguilar, or their respective sons) who perform there;

A great place to get rustic furniture, framing and dental work, and at least one reputedly very good plastic surgeon.

My references are from personal knowledge, and no, I'm not peddling for anyone. Some day Nuevo Laredo will restore its civility, and be what it used to be before this new age prohibition, fueled by rampant corruption, and an insatiable appetite for drugs, took over.

Enlighten the readership, ax the trash.

Major changes are in order

As a native and resident of Nuevo Laredo -and as a user of Wikipedia- I am surprised by the poor quality of this article. I will contribute some necessary changes in due time; in the meantime, I'd rather discuss it here, in the spirit of democracy.

Here are a few suggestions:

1) This is an encyclopedia. Information that is relevant, informative, and truthful should be championed over nonsense such as local band recommendations. Those references should (and will) be removed. I've been living in this city for twenty years, and I've never heard of half the bands this article makes reference to. And even if that weren't the case, it is unnacceptable and ludicrous to include specific band and bar recommendations ("check out [band]"); this would be understandable if the subject matter were an integral part of the city, but it's not.

2) It is no secret that the city has gained international attention due to the drug cartel-related violence that has proliferated in the last few years. I cannot fathom why anyone would want such information absent from this article; it's ugly business, but it is vital to the article.

3) The entire second section is beyond ridiculous: directions on how to get specific transit permits and other such paperwork is absolutely unnecessary and unworthy of mention in an encyclopedia article. As it stands, the article reads like a cumbersome tourist guide full of unnecessary information.

4) It'd be beneficial to include historical and demographic information pertaining to the city. For ideas, refer to articles on other mexican cities (i.e. Tampico, Monterrey, etc).

(Other User Note: Why would you include other cities in the article of one? that makes no sense)

Need more credit than the Zona Tolerancia

I live in Nuevo Laredo and I think that the article should be bigger than the Zona Tolerancia's one because my city has alot more to offer than a Donkey show so im going to go and take pictures and expand this article.

How right you are! I honestly expected to find a lot more on this community. The article is woefully short of relevant material. The cartel violence is the longest section (more than half the total article), but even that could be expanded. Meanwhile, the separate article on Boy's Town is highly detailed and probably three times as long as the main article. Maybe someone could do less research in la zona, and maybe a bit more on the city in general. I've never been to Nuevo Laredo, so I'm curious about statements questioning the quality of the food. Is that a Mexico generalization, or are there specific quality issues in Nuevo Laredo? Sources, please! For a city of 273,797 (per Michelin's 2005 Road Atlas), I'm hoping someone in the know will greatly expand and add sections on the following suggestions:
  • Transportation
  • Economy (Maquiladoras in the area?/Tourism?)
  • Communication/Local Media
  • Demographic Data
  • History
  • Relationship with cross-border Laredo (maybe as part of a wider section on border culture in the area)
  • Unique Features/Neighborhoods (to which "la zona" could be incorporated possibly)
  • Cartel Violence Expansion, including facts and figures, affect on tourism

Truth, Not Lies

I live in Laredo, and I work at a Pilot Travel Centers and truck drivers ALWAYS know about boystown...it's no secret. Wikipedia is about INFORMATION not advertisement...Trying to sugarcoat the situation over there is just wrong...

The truth is this: They almost legalized drugs because the drug wars got so bad over there, people get kidnapped all the time...Señor Frogs is the place teenagers from Laredo go to drink because they don't card. Drugs are cheap with no prescription, and the AFI had to come in to settle all the police corruption. It's not a happy place to be, and all the pictures in the world can't hide it....


Link to the Zona and Other Issues

I have re-inserted the link to the Zona. It appears that someone is ashamed that there is a Zona de Tolerancia in the city, and wants to expunge any reference to it in the Nuevo Laredo entry. The fact remains; the Zona is a significant component of Nuevo Laredo. Aside from its importance to tourism (even today), it plays a strong role in the lives of many Laredoans (of both Laredos). Literally thousands of people work in the Zona during any given week, and many more visit the site as patrons (even for just a beer). Furthermore, it is the key location where many of the various social levels of the two cities interact. On a typical weekend it is not uncommon for politicians, business executives, school teachers, leaders of stolen car rings, drug traffickers, and local and federal police officers, to interact in the Zona. In some cases, these informal encounters are even rather social. Furthermore, the Zona is visited by significant numbers of well-connected males from Monterrey and other cities (when they are in town). It is true that in recent years wealthier individuals now have their assistants go to the Zona to hire prostitutes and bring them back to a hotel, rather than visit the Zona themselves. Nonetheless, the importance of the Zona remains high.

Indeed, other geographic areas with zones dedicated to prostitution are mentioned in their Wiki entries (for example, Nevada, Amsterdam, Thailand, Dubai, etc.). Why are we so hesitant to have it as a link in the Nuevo Laredo entry? Furthermore, the impact of prostitution in Nuevo Laredo is much greater proportionally than that of the state of Nevada, or even Dubai.

To deny its existence is pointless and frankly rather childish. So my suggestion is that we avoid deleting the link to the zona. As much as we might not like the idea, the fact remains that it is worthy of a link within the Nuevo Laredo entry.

While we are on the issue of what should be done to improve the Nuevo Laredo entry...I agree with several prior comments. The entry needs more work. For most of the last year, the entry has read like a travel guide. We need to include more descriptions of the city itself. It is not all that encyclopedic yet and needs some improvement. It lacks any historical or social component. I do like the idea of an urban description section. It needs work, but it is a good starting point. The characteristics of the different sections of the city (socio-demographic, economic, transportation, touristic, etc.) patterns can be explored in more detail.

Furthermore, the discussion of the so-called Gang Wars needs work. Actually, I am a little concerend that 1/3 of the entire entry on Nuevo Laredo deals with the topic. I think it is a dis-servfice to the city to have it represent such a prominant portion of the entry. We should reconsider how it should fit in the discussion. Indeed, there is so much that can be said about the drug-related violence in the city it might warrant a separate entry. I would be glad to work with someone on this in the near future.

I also believe the Nuevo Laredo entry should, at some point, include information about the following: demographics, educational institutions, maquiladoras, and international trade/transshipment. I could also work on this.

In sum, I believe that we should develop the entry and attempt to formulate a more-professional organization of the information. Those are my thoughts.

My 10 cents

I think the zona paragraph is too long it should be reduced to 1-2 sentences. I don't think the zona is too important to the n laredo economy whatsoever nor do i think it is large it's only 4-6 blocks big. the way the paragraph is now, looks like an advertisement and makes it seem it is safe to go there, many people have been killed there due to violence.

more important to n laredo economy:

  • Trade* done
  • Maquiladoras
  • New Construction
  • Education* done

We need a a whole new section on entertainment. things that should be added are the club campestre (golf course), a couple of clubs and the type of music, the bullrings, shopping in the guerrero (downtown) and the center of cultural center.

Gang wars

I changed the subsection heading from "Gang wars" to "Drug-related Violence." I hope no one objects. I believe the expression gang war implies something similar to the turf wars of L.A., or some other big US city. It's not like that. They are not fighting over territory per se. They are trying to eliminate the competition (take over drug trafficking routes to the U.S.) It's cartels, not typical gangs. It tends to be somewhat more professional, and tends to be orchestrated from leaders high up in the organizations (maybe from Chapo Guzman himself, etc). Not, just some street thugs worried about another gang member treading in their turf or tagging their fence. Also, the more general term drug-related violence can serve as a section for other problems related to the drug trafficking. I'm not married to the section name change, and I wont get offended if you wanna change it.

IMHO, this is not B-class (or the B rating of the related WikiProjects need to be reworked). Why? Because sections about transport and geography are missing, and there are large lists instead of prose, about the radio stations or newspapers. Also sourcing is a bit slight. Cheers. Sebastian scha. Climate chart can't be right

The climate chart indicates temperatures that are considerably hotter than in Laredo, TX, which directly borders the town, which seems highly improbable. The listed temperatures also greatly contrast with the written temperatures in the text above it (which coincide much more with the temperatures listed for Laredo). I think the climate chart needs to be corrected. Not sure if I can do it myself, but I believe it should be done. Aoa8212 (talk) 12:50, 2 July 2015 (UTC)

 Done I have fixed the climate data issue you were mentioning. I did add this climate data a while ago (see this edit) but it has been vandalized by numerous editors such as the ridiculous claim of a record low of 0.0 °C (32.0 °F)in January even though the source said −7.9 °C (17.8 °F). Even the monthly averages were vandalized too and did not match up with the numbers in the given source from SMN. Ssbbplayer (talk) 03:35, 3 July 2015 (UTC)

This article needs an updated main photo

The photograph shown as the main image is outdated. Nuevo Laredo’s “Fundadores” monument is no longer there anymore. That part of the city has changed, making it an old photo (more than 8 years I reckon). I’ve tried looking for a more updated photo of Nuevo Laredo in Wikimedia but no luck. If there is anyone who would like to upload a current photo of Nuevo Laredo (at least 3 years or less) to Wikimedia that shows an iconic view of the city of Nuevo Laredo would be much appreciated.
