Breakwaters and broken stone[edit]

Block-setting crane#Moa describes the 1872 construction of a breakwater at Oamaru, and two civil-engineering inventions: a new form of block-setting crane with which to build it, and the invention of the powered concrete mixer in order to cast concrete blocks to use. This is put down to a shortage of useful high quality stone in the area: that which is available is either too small (too broken or faulted in the quarry) or not resistant enough for a breakwater in a rough sea.
