Citations?[edit]

This article is awfully light on citations. For example, no sources are footnoted in the section arguing why we should view Odoric's journey as a diplomatic mission. The article also presumes a definite chronology to Odoric that does not exist. The only date we can be sure of is his death. The 1296 date of his missionary departure seems completely fabricated. Article should be revised with consideration of critical scholarship like A.C. Dates wrong[edit]

This says he was born around 1286 and went as a missionary in 1296, which would make him only 10 years old. That cannot be right. The source for the 1296 date says he was born in 1265, which makes more sense. Maybe 1286 is just a typo? Gobanian (talk) 10:33, 27 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Actually it says he was accepted into the Order in 1296, and his journey started in "1316-1318". Older sources differ on his date of birth, with "c. 1286" being commonest. However in its current state the article body has 1280 due to forensic research but the 1286 Births Category. For now I'll change the category but the uncertainty should be noted. Czech version of his name[edit]

Czech wikipedia claims that his name is coming from the Czech name Oldřich (https://cs.wikipedia.org/wiki/Old%C5%99ich) and instead of the mysterious Mattiusi family, it is more likely that his father was Matúš (older version of Matouš, or a Czech version of Matthew).
