I am Fred Schiffer, the author of the book discussed here. First, I am pleased to see my work having an entry in Wikipedia, and overall the article is positive, but the writer did not seem to notice that in the preface to the Second Edition, I discussed the research since 1998 when the original publication came out. Altogether we have 20 peer-reviewed published experiments from Harvard Medical School that have tested the theory with fMRI, anatomical MRI, DTI, NIRS, rTMS, EEG, unilateral tPBM, as well as clinical case series. In 2019 we were awarded an NIH grant to evaluate the safety and efficacy a novel treatment of opioid use disorder based solely on my hypothesis and we published the study's findings that those with the active unilateral treatment to enhance their positive hemisphere had a 71% decrease in cravings from 4 weeks of twice weekly 4-minute unilateral tPBM with 3 weekly follow-ups. The benefit over sham had a p-value of < 0.0001 and an effect size of 1.52 at the first follow-up. From these results, the FDA granted us a Breakthrough Designation, and NIH/NIDA through its HEAL program awarded us a phase II grant for 2.5 M to do a 26-week study of 130 participants in a randomized control trial.

My point is that there is serious compelling evidence for the theory and its clinical application that is discussed in the preface to the Second Edition. I also felt that the review was positive until the end when the author stated that McManus said the theory was simply an extension of hemisphericity, which I agree is discredited. The theory has no relation to hemisphericity and McManus is wrong on this point. McManus felt that the writing was "execrable." Since I have never read execrable writing, I am proud to be possibly the world's only execrable writer. The Free Press of Simon and Schuster paid 100K for this distinction.
