Merging Old Town and Chinatown into Old Town Chinatown[edit]

In order to reflect the official neighborhoods as defined by Portland's Office of Neighborhood Involvement, I think there should be an Old Town Chinatown, Portland, Oregon page. I propose that the Chinatown page be merged into this one, and that it subsequently be renamed to reflect the recognized neighborhood name. (Whether there should be a hyphen before "Chinatown" in the name may be debatable, but since the neighborhood association bylaws don't include it, I don't think we should either.) --ScottMainwaring 02:34, 23 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for doing this; I was planning to. Living in the neighborhood, I agree that, while Old Town (southern portion) and Chinatown (northern/western portion) are somewhat distinct, they are thought of/managed as one area. Also, I would prefer a - or / seperating the names, though I don't know what it technically/legally should be. City web pages use both. Jason McHuff 02:34, 2 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Should this article be moved to "Old Town / Chinatown, Portland, Oregon"? Many sources have the slash included in the name of the neighborhood. --Another Believer _(Talk) 17:35, 19 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The Portland Online boundary map uses the slash. The neighborhood association page doesn't use the slash. The neighborhood page on PortlandOnline uses both. I'd defer to the neighborhood association's right to apparently choose not to use it. Adding a street names in Chinese section to the Chinatown section[edit]

I'm currently thinking on adding a street names in Chinese section to the Chinatown section of the page just like how they do it on the Chinatown, New York and Chinatown, Toronto pages. However, I'll need some people to go and take pictures of the street names and post it on the page so I can translate it to a translator to figure what Chinese characters are used on the street signs. --Victor x 350 05:16, 26 October 2012 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Victorx350 (talk • contribs)

Criticism[edit]

Two things are missing from this article. I'd add them, but don't know the best way how to.

Originally, Chinatown extended far to the south of Burnside, but over the years almost all traces of its presence there have been eradicated. The only visible example of this southern part of Chinatown is a single building, next to Cameron Books. (I don't remember the name of that building, but anyone who has been to that part of downtown knows it stick out like a sore thumb.)
In the past decade, many of the Asian-American businesses have moved to the east part of Portland, in an area centered on the intersection of 82nd & Division & called by boosters "The Jade District".[1] (One prime example is the well-known restaurant Hung Far Low which moved from Old Town/Chinatown to just north of this intersection.) In fact, someone ought to create Jade district (Portland, Oregon) -- or whatever would be the proper name for the article.

Fork out pages for both NRHP-listed districts?[edit]

Should we fork out pages for the Portland Skidmore/Old Town Historic District and the Portland New Chinatown/Japantown Historic District (link), and keep this article as a more general overview of the neighborhood? Aren't the NRHP-listed districts inherently notable? Those pages could be more specific and list out individual buildings... that level of detail could never be done in this article.
