Mauna Kea State Park [1] does not include HP - those buildings are something else entirely. I also don't have a digital pic of HP, I'm afraid. Can anyone help? Awien (talk) 23:23, 17 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Misleading hook[edit]

From my sources, it seems most actual astronomers use the observatories over the Internet now. So these facilities are used mostly by technicians who need to be on-site, and astronomers on their first visit familiarizing themselves with the equipment or testing new instruments. Construction[edit]

Making my suggestion here because I seem to be doing sth. wrong with refs. It should be clarified that the present facility was constructed in 1983, and that for ~20 years all astronomers using the telescopes as well as support staff lived at HP during their runs (remote observing is recent):

Hale Pohaku the Mid-Level Facility was completed and dedicated in 1983. Astronomers working at the summit facilities were able to stay in the dorms at Hale Pöhaku to maintain their acclimatization to the altitude. Dining and lounge areas provide rest and relaxation for the scientists and telescope operators. Offices, a library, and small labs support the scientific activity which draws the astronomers to Mauna Kea . . .

Yes, we could add more details to clarify, good point. Still not sure when the VIS was built exactly. Looks like the paper you found was sourced (and almost plagerized?) from chapter 6 of the master plan (it is cited) so I will use the plan. Not sure what your "sth." comment means. We do prefer using the {{cite}} templates to raw URLs, because they clearly give dates, authors, publishers, etc. if available. If that is what you mean. And yes, too bad that state pictures are not public. I was hoping we could find one taken by NASA, but they actually often use contractors so not sure that would officially be public. As for "sth." - you got it. It's sth. that happened when I was away from the interwebs, so I would appreciate it if you could point me to the simple how-to explanation.
And finally, pretty as the new pic is, I fear it's really off-topic here. The altar doesn't "mark" the road, it's on the far side, not particularly conspicuous, and technically must be on Mauna Loa. Your call, though. Awien (talk) 22:22, 31 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Could you elaborate on your complaint a bit please? The photo desription says it is on the saddle, which means the OCIA would be somewhere in the center right of the picture. It is not quite high enough resolution to make it out, but it vaguely looks like the switchback right above the center is visible. Of course feel free to replace with a more close-up picture of the facility. But if the photo description is wrong, it should be corrected, and if you know the coordinates of the altar then we should add them to the commons page too. By no means a complaint, just a very minor thought (and yes, wouldn't a pic (oops, photograph) be nice?).
No problem with the caption, that altar is on the saddle road. I just don't see it *marking* the access road because the altar isn't so much at the intersection as near it, on the Mauna Loa side of the saddle road, at the foot of the kipuka, across the parking area from the hunter registration station (Big-Island-kine directions, coordinates I wot not of). But what I've seen so many times is all I know, there could be a connection with the access road I haven't heard about. Don't worry about it, it's certainly doing no harm here.
