Linux-centric?

This article is totaly Linux-centric. It assumes OSS is a Linux thing, but it supports 11 different Unices (including *BSD). It also says it's deprecated in favour of ALSA. This is true in the case of Linux, but not in other context.

I'm going to change the article to have a neutral, Unix-centered POV.

(I will keep, however, Linux-specific bits in a separate paragraph. I think it's worth mentioning ALSA too.)

Not linux-centric?

Actually, although OSS may not be a Linux thing, it's definitely not the standard on Unix operating systems. Most Unix operating systems *don't* use it, and Sun's Audio interface, as contributed back to CSRG, is very common and better designed. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 202.63.52.242 (talk) 04:22, 27 March 2008 (UTC)

And Wrong

It's also wrong. 'The project was initially free software, but following the project's success, Savolainen started the company 4Front Technologies and made his support for newer sound devices and improvements proprietary' is incorrect. From Savolainen's blog: 'In autumn 1995 I was contacted by Dev Mazumdar who had made a SB Pro (MCA) driver for AIX. More than one implementation of the ALSA interface

QNX Neutrino 6.x also implements the ALSA interface, using only the user space library from the ALSA project. The ALSA kernel models are in this case replaced by a set of QNX-specific servers. QNX does not include the ALSA library directly in its Momentics IDE package because of licensing issues, though. I don't have time to update the article. OSS4 Re-introduced to Linux Kernel

It would be helpful to see a discussion of why OSS4 was re-introduced into the Linux kernel, and whether it now supports suspend and resume, the lack of which led to it being superseded by ALSA. Features

No. In fact it surpasses ALSA in this area, as it can play more types of apps at the same time, and provide each with its own volume control 85.250.166.120 (talk) 20:51, 25 October 2009 (UTC)

Criticism

What is the point of this section? Wikipedia is full of articles citing advantages & disadvantages, but this? It's rubbish. I think it should be removed. OSS is used among many other systems, maybe not the 4Front implementation, but the API is. OSS in relation to ALSA

OSS both as API and as software has been criticized by some developers, such as Paul Davis and Lennart Poettering.

As a reference for Paul Davis criticism, his article A Tutorial on Using the ALSA Audio API is being referenced. However, in that article I cannot find any mention of "OSS" or "Open Sound System". Please clarify the evidence of his criticism with a more specific reference or remove the claim that he criticised it. --DevUrandom (talk) 15:29, 30 December 2017 (UTC)
