What is opera film?[edit]

I thought the removed examples of The Tales of Hoffmann (1951) and Eugene Onegin (1958) were suggestive of the intended scope of the article. The 'references' to which nothing yet refers could be a starting place too: do those books support "opera film" as a thing exclusive of documentaries like In the Shadow of the Stars,or do they employ familiar expressions like "cinematic adaptations of opera", "filmed opera" or "opera on screen"?

I can't think offhand of "film operas" composed for the medium of film or digital video, but it might be useful to think about where this article might fit in with Television opera, List of television operas, radio opera, list of radio operas and opera simulcasting. The intended scope of this article, as demonstrated by those examples, is to cover films which are recordings of an opera – films that Wikipedia categorises in Category:Films based on operas. As I see it, there are two kinds of such films: 1) theatrical release, proper films, e.g. Carmen (1984 film), 2) film recordings of stage performances, e.g. Turandot at the Forbidden City, all Met, ROH, and similar transmissions and hundreds of direct-to-video recordings. These things just need to be incorporated into the article. I wonder whether the article's creator, User:De wafelenbak, intends to expand it. -- Michael Bednarek (talk) 05:58, 8 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
