Undue weight with the focus mostly on one smuggler[edit]

I think this article is doing a good impression of a coatrack article as it places undue weight with its focus on individual perpetrators and nothing much about the Operation itself beyond the lead section. The article seems to go off-topic immediately after mentioning how many reptile smugglers were captured, as it then delves into great detail discussing just one, for which another article already exists and it is more informative about Operation Chameleon than this article is! This article then mentions another three smugglers, in an almost off-hand manner as an after-thought. What about the other 22 smugglers? What about the other countries involved. The international treaties that were violated by the smugglers? Also, the article is very US centric as it discusses only the US law, which does not extend to the rest of the world. What about the law in other countries? The mutual assistance offered by the law enforcement agencies from around the world? The international treaties involved? What do the Lacey Act and the Endangered Species Act require people to do or not do and why are FWS concerned about enforcing these laws? While this may be obvious to an American lawyer or environmentalist, this is not obvious to most readers. We should assume our dear readers know nothing, so we need to inform them by writing a better article. This article could stop at the end of the first sentence in the investigations section and be about as informative as it is now. The purpose of the lead paragraph (the one above the table of contents) is to summarize the rest of the article. It should contain enough information so you know what the article is about and why this article is notable. Ideally, everything mentioned in the lead section should be explained in detail below the table of contents. It doesn't do that at present. It is currently written as if there are two subjects. Above the table of contents is a stub about Operation Chameleon and below is a completely different article about some reptile smugglers being apprehended. This article needs a deep clean-up to fix it, which is why it only gets a "Start" rating from me. - Cameron Dewe (talk) 11:59, 8 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
