Sex for Sam

I moved the XM info out of the Sex for Sam section, into the XM section. --Bill.matthews 00:59, 1 October 2006 (UTC)

Good change. Definitely better than the immediate previous edit that said they were "unable" to stay just on satellite. When will people understand that Wikipedia should not be the forum to fight battles? Stoneice02 04:19, 1 October 2006 (UTC)

Under Repercussions in this section, the final point mentions a Flornce and Harper who are not mentioned anywhere else in the piece. I would suggest (as someone who doesn't have any prioir knoledge of Opie & Anthony, and was using this to find out more about them, that this is either expanded on (who are Florence & Harper; how did she die; why was he given community service) or removed. Cheers

External Links

I noticed wowfans got removed. Not sure why, it seems to be a valid fan site. I know there might be some folks that favor one fansite or another, but this article doesn't seem to be the place to wage that war. --Bill.matthews 18:42, 2 October 2006 (UTC)

I believe that this section of WP:EL is relevent: On articles about topics with many fansites, including a link to one major fansite may be appropriate, marking the link as such. Fanlistings are generally not informative and should not ordinarily be included. According to this, one major fansite is enough. Naconkantari 18:46, 2 October 2006 (UTC)
I agree having four or five fansites may be too much. But I don't think we've ever come to a consensus as to which should be the one major fansite? And I don't think it's appropriate to arbitrarily remove this one site as opposed to others. If the community agrees to only list one fansite, we could discuss it here. But until then I would suggest the link remains. --Bill.matthews 18:58, 2 October 2006 (UTC)
You're right that one is not enough. I think THREE - Wackbag, FBA, and Dot Net.--XMBRIAN 19:22, 2 October 2006 (UTC)
The key word is arbitrarily. I would vote to keep all three since they are all mentioned on the show as much as, if not more than, the official sites. Stoneice02 19:29, 2 October 2006 (UTC)
It appears SpreadtheOnAVirus.com is dead? So that could come off? That would leave us with Wackbag, FBA, DotNet, and possibly Wowfans. I would vote for all four. Personally I don't use any of the four, but they all seem relevant. And if three would be okay, why not four? The Stern article has nine. --Bill.matthews 19:38, 2 October 2006 (UTC)
Wowfans is not mentioned on the show at all.--XMBRIAN 20:23, 3 October 2006 (UTC)
It is listed on OpieandAnthony.com and i can provide 200 clips of when it was plugged on the show.. most recently as within the last 7 days by BAM
Just a random thought I just had. Why should there be a link on Wikipedia to a web site that you MUST register at in order to view anything? Seems pretty pointless.--XMBRIAN 20:16, 4 October 2006 (UTC)

Incorrect listing of the time the show airs

The airing time of the show is listed as 6AM-11AM, the show is consistantly on til after 11AM, Ron & Fez come on at 12PM EST meaning that 6AM-12PM is dedicated to the show. 208.252.49.130 19:58, 3 October 2006 (UTC)badfishstan

Getting long

This article is getting rather long. I think the stories mentioned or recurring bits could be shortened. That info, while interesting, is not worthy of being in an encyclopedic article. --Bill.matthews 15:08, 5 October 2006 (UTC)

Departure of Ben

I am a faithful O&A listener, but I don't do the message board thing so I must have missed something on the show. What happened to Ben? I had no idea he was gone until I read the last edit. Stoneice02

I am not sure, they still reference him, but he left, I assume for another job. Anybody with solid information could add it to the article --Bill.matthews 20:27, 12 October 2006 (UTC)

Apparently he lied about not spitting on the Stern Fan (who Master Po took down). They were going to suspend him & he quit.

Number One in Afternoon Drive while on WNEW

"In June 1998, O&A were back on New York station WNEW-FM, where they became the number one afternoon drive show in New York by 2000."

The above line from the article seems to be poorly sourced. I'm sure they weren't number one overall in the afternoon drive in the NYC market. I'm fairly sure that the all news radio stations held the number one and two positions in those years. Maybe they were number one in certain demos but either way, the assertion that they were number one needs to be sourced or removed.

This seems to be the problem with the entire article, it's either poorly sourced or it is sprinkled with POV. How come there is not a Reference section at the bottom for sourcing? Buster 20:44, 28 October 2006 (UTC)

It's because the article is getting dangerously close to WP:CRUFT LilDice 00:26, 29 October 2006 (UTC)
I tend to agree. This entry reads like an offshoot of a fan forum rather than an encyclopedia article. And in reading the past Talk archives I'm guessing any attempts to make it conform with Wikipedia standards will be met with stiff resistance. Buster 17:51, 29 October 2006 (UTC)
You're correct, don't try to correct anything unless you're ready for edit wars and a long mediation process. LilDice 20:03, 29 October 2006 (UTC)
I agree the citation tags should eb ther efor the claims about ratings. But I think adding citation tags for every "classic O&A bits" is unrealitic. For example, on a TV show summary (or episode summary) you wouldn't expect every statement to include a citation? Or for radio show articles, you'll typically find event summaries, and I doubt each one needs a citation?. I added two citations for the WAAF-FM incidents, and left the citation statements for the rating claims, but I took out the 12 fact tags for the Classic O&A moments. --Bill.matthews 14:17, 31 October 2006 (UTC)
I can't agree and I really hate to keep reminding people that this is an encyclopedia, not an episode guide nor a summary of radio episodes. I don't object to the "classic O&A bits" being there at all but I do actually I expect every statement of fact to include a citation or refer to a reference section in the article (which is another problem that needs to be addressed- the current section labeled "References" needs to be re-labeled and a "References" section needs to be created at the bottom of the page for verification of the articles facts). When you say " for radio show articles, you'll typically find event summaries", are you referring to radio articles on Wikipedia or on other web sites? Buster 15:39, 31 October 2006 (UTC)
I think episode guides are encylopedic, take a look at the category "Episodes by television series". Certainly every epsiode does not need citations to back up the information given? And as for radio shows, I am referring to on Wikipedia. Just browse through Category:American_radio_personalities and you'll find that show "bits" are not sourced. Of course each show bit/reference/etc will not have a news source. Would you expect the Don Imus or The Howard Stern Show articles to include citations for each fact listed about the show? I don't disagree they should be there for controversal statements, like ratings. --Bill.matthews 16:44, 31 October 2006 (UTC)

The citation that was added to validate the claim that O&A were #1 in afternoon drive on WNEW that refers back to a column written by About.com columnist Corey Deitz. Since it's a column, an opinion piece, and the columnist does not say where his fact came from (did he read it in this Wikipedia article on Opie and Anthony?). The cite needs to come from a news report or the like that refers to the aribitrons for afternoon drive for that period. Buster 15:56, 31 October 2006 (UTC)

Valid point. I changed it to an XM/CBS press release. --Bill.matthews 16:44, 31 October 2006 (UTC)
That might be a problem too. That press lease may be committing a sin of omission. Doing a little research this morning this is what I've turned up.
The following are all the New York market Arbitron ratings for the afternoon I can currently find: 2000 Spring Arbitrons- WNEW 5th; 2000 Summer Arbitrons- WNEW 5th; 2000 Fall Arbitrons- WNEW 3rd; 2001 Fall Arbitrons- WNEW 7th; 2002 Winter Arbitrons- WNEW 10th. These are all from the NY Daily News web site. I have the links.
The good news is that I did fine a reference at the NY Daily News web site to an Arbitron rating that says O&A were number one with men 25 to 54 during the Spring 2000 book. This is the sin of omission I'm talking about. XM is saying that O&A were #1 while on WNEW, which was true... except they are leaving out the fact that it was with men 25 to 54. For a press release, that's fine, for an encyclopedia it's not. If the missing Winter 2000 Arbitrons for afternoon drive can be found and it shows that O&A became number in that book then the statement "where they became the number one afternoon drive show in New York by 2000" can be used. Until then the paragraph should be rewritten to reflect the current facts available. Buster 17:55, 31 October 2006 (UTC)
Sounds like you're right. Do you want to suggest rewording? If not I can take a crack at it tomorrow. Could you post the link so I could cite it? --Bill.matthews 17:17, 1 November 2006 (UTC)

Movies

I think it's time to update the movie section. I added Clockwork Orange and i think Goodfellas is the most notable De'Niro film.

Neutrality and Cleanup needed

This article is very repetitive and has obviously had a lot of work done on it by fans. It needs serious cleanup for this reason. It is also questionably neutral. Mentions by friends and enemies of the show, judgments on whether bits were created by one person or another and calls on their quality go too far. The neutrality of this article isn't too bad overall, but there are little slips here and there that need to be ferreted out.

ere's what I think should be removed: Enemies of the Show, Recurring Bits, Film References, Radio Friends, "Characters" of the Show (cleanup not deletion), Stories Mentioned. What do you think? LilDice 19:52, 28 December 2006 (UTC)

Too few sources

This is a very long article with very few sources and many POV assertions. For example, who considers certain people to be friends or enemies of the show? Who considers certain bits to be classics? Offhand it looks like 90% of this article is unverifiable. -Will Beback · · 01:15, 9 December 2006 (UTC)

Recurring Comments

This section seems completly non-notable and doesn't read particularly well. I am considering removing it, thoughts? LilDice 19:46, 28 December 2006 (UTC)

You people might as well delete this entry altogether. Seems Stern fans and Wiki editors have chopped the hell out of it and have taken a lot of the intriguing information out of it!

I simply cleaned it up, I do the same to the Stern article. If you want to duplicate all the fan information at your own fan page go for it, but this is an encyclopedia. LilDice 20:03, 29 January 2007 (UTC)

If it was done for the Stern article, it's also an injustice. The two programs are the most popular in radio today. They both openly hate each other. Both have built careers off of being controversial and by attacking their enemies verbally and through their legions of fans. That's not biased. That's simply fact. It isn't fair to leave information like this out to anyone wanting to learn the true story of both of their radio careers. User:BrooklynJ 23:47, 29 January 2007 (UTC)

Stern's show is one of the "the most popular in radio today"? Is he still on the air? I thought he retired.

Regarding Greg "opie" Hughes, it lists several upstate NY radio stations, at least one should be listed by name. 96.5 WCMF in Rochester, NY home of Brother Wease and the Morning Circus. This part of his early radio history he himself has credited as being the catalyst for his success in this media. Brother Wease (Alan Levin) recently helped Opie ambush Andrew Dice Clay, Opie also refused to allow the station in Rochester that carries the morning show to broadcast it live so it wouldnt compete with Brother Wease.--Jasklo 05:42, 27 March 2007 (UTC)

Can we avoid "Zombie speak" please? O&A never had a 0.0. It's all Stern could say to save face because he can't stand the thought of another show succeeding in his spot. The "David Lee Roth" had higher ratings comment was more nonsense by the insecure Stern because it kills him that they have his old studio and work with his old whipping boy, Tom Chiasanu.

According to Wackbag they just got the Hulk Music permanently.

Speculation on all the forums is that they've been fired from XM; this incident needs to be documented.

Its just speculation so far, but I wouldn't be surprised if they were fired. XM should think about the subscriptions they will be losing. 1 2 Both of those links are to the fansites threads about cancelling your XM units, probably important for the article since it seems like a lot of people are doing it. They will still be on CBS, AP Article so it has to be true. They were almost totally taken off the XM page, with a large picture of Ron & Fez replacing the large pic of Opie & Anthony on the header. Note that they have been completely taken off of the schedule.--Hndsmepete 08:34, 16 May 2007 (UTC)

Opie & Anthony are not fired. They will return after their one month suspension. There have been considerable calls & emails voicing support for O&A. XM 18:35, 16 May 2007 (UTC)

It does seem odd that this is not mentioned anywhere.The-bus 17:49, 18 May 2007 (UTC)

There appears to be a deliberate attempt to "water down" the exact cause for the XM suspension. The offense comprised more than a statement of desire for sex with Rice but was also to be done with force and while punching her in the face, as expressed by one of the hosts and not a guest. -- allanintogreen

Actually, if you want to get technical, the reason they were "officially" suspended was due to XM's feelings that their "apology" after the fact (which they were ordered to give, btw) came across as insincere (which it was), and that they continued to talk about the issue after being expressly ordered not to. NOT because of anything they said on the show. Which is part of the reason some fans are literally discussing the idea of a class-action suit against XM since XM's claims of "uncensored" content are, in fact, false advertising (and since XM has clearly failed to deliver the product they promised in their advertising).
As for unofficial reasons, no one seems to know for sure, though speculated motives range everywhere from trying to protect the show by "hiding" them until the furor dies down all the way to staking them out as a sacrifice to help grease the wheels of the XM/Sirius merger. Ultimately, the people who know the "real" reasons aren't talking.
As for the confusion between suspension and firing, that's due to the fact that firings are often disguised as suspensions in radio (ie, after their 30-day suspension is up, and the chaos has died down, they'll be quietly let go), and Opie and Anthony themselves have hinted at the fact that they have been/will be fired on some of the fan sites online. The converse of that is that XM might indeed plan on keeping them (and thus, will be putting them back on the air after the suspension is up), but is pulling them off the air now to minimize the number of sound-bites news organizations and special interest groups can pull to make them look worse and distort the story any further than it has already been distorted.
It might be worth noting that a number of O&A fans have cancelled their XM subscriptions in protest, and that supposedly as many as 50,000 have cancelled - though obviously, in a situation like this, exact official numbers are hard to come by.
To be honest, the best possible course of action with this might be to wait until after mid-June, see exactly what REALLY happens (as opposed to speculation), and then report on the issue in hindsight. Hossenfeffer 13:21, 26 May 2007 (UTC)
By all means, get "technical". This is an encyclopedia after all. The most accurate information would be welcome. Ummm, no, scratch that, the most accurate information is REQUIRED. Buster 23:45, 30 May 2007 (UTC)

WFNY in New York is not WXRK again

According to the Federal Communications Commission database WXRK is still licensed to a CBS Radio station in Cleveland Heights, Ohio (Click here for FCC WXRK record) and WFNY is still assigned to 92.3 in New York (Click here for FCC WFNY record) so it is my opinion and suggestion in the Opie and Anthony article that WXRK be changed back to WFNY for the time being until such time as the FCC database gives legal clarification that 92.3 in New York has been assigned the WXRK-FM call letters again and if 92.3 in New York is identifying itself as WXRK wouldn't that be a violation of FCC regulations. 209.212.28.62 17:10, 29 May 2007 (UTC)

At one point there were 3 WXRK stations across the nation (LA, Cleveland and NY) so the multiple call signals are fine as long as they are in differnet markets.71.126.107.65 19:36, 2 June 2007 (UTC)

Daily bits

Days before XM suspended Opie and Anthony, they decided to do 'morning show, wacky bit' radio. So far the current bit schedule is as follows:

Monday: Pot Talk, Moose Cumsies

Tuesday: Rock Scream, Hummer

Wednesday: Cat sound, Whip em out, Butt Rub

Thursday: Fun Fact, Phone Call, Extreme Male Camel Toe, Perv News, Dog Sound, C(K)asual Kenny, Prank Call

Friday: Air Guitar, Point and Laugh, F.U. Fridays, Is Tom Alive

Bits continue to be added daily, such as Road Rules Friday - Whenever the radio show travels, i.e. their Traveling Virus Tour, there are no rules, and any of the bits can occur.

So? What's your point? Do you want to add those to the article? If so do you have a reference you can cite? Buster 17:08, 30 June 2007 (UTC)
This should not be added to the wiki in this form. Listing in this way does not inform the reader of the nature of this joke. All of these 'daily bits' are one bit themselves, with the exception of Whip 'em Out Wednesday (which has been OnA's trademark bit for years.) The daily bits gag is a parody of the way other radio stations have daily bits and is not taken too seriously. Rock scream Tuesday I concede will probably grow into its own bit but for now is part of this one joke. Anyway this joke has only been going on since after the suspension June 15 - today. It doesnt seem worthy of a mention yet even let alone that much space on their wiki. (Removed large addition by Rtphokie) --Badwordwit 15:07, 2 July 2007 (UTC)

Except for the fact that an encyclopedia isn't meant to be "your handy guide to up and coming O&A bits and gags". Know what I mean? There's all sorts of fan forums for that. Why should the average reader have to wade through a ridiculous amount of Fancruft? Point them where to go in the "links" section if they need to know the minutia of the show. Buster 19:16, 20 August 2007 (UTC)
I've added an innapropriate tone tag to invite cleanup. There are hundereds of unsourced statements and statements and "facts" which are innapropriate in tone for an encyclopedia. Any humor inline is also innapropriate, as are obvious pieces of schtick which are unverified and statements regarding body parts such as the anus or any scatalogical humor, including references to vomit. MamaPajama 16:00, 2 September 2007 (UTC)
While this discussion is now becoming off topic and would more be relevant to the topic directly below.. do you care to give some statements that you deem inappropriate? The only vomit reference is pertaining to Pat from Moonachie and the Eggnog contest, both incidents and topics should be covered here. It seems your tagging of the article may border on censorship. As for references, there are currently 42.. how many more would you like? If you would take the time to go through the article and apply {{fact}} to the statements you think need a citation that would be a lot more helpful than just applying general cleanup tags. I've removed the tag. See below. MamaPajama 14:34, 6 September 2007 (UTC)

Cleanup Recomendations

"Program content" can go, too much esoteric minutia. Post a link in the "External links" section directing interested parties to all that stuff.

"Other enterprises", dump it. Same reason and solution as above.

"Controversies" Incorporate it in to the "Background and history" section.

"Station listings" section stays as is, very useful for the article.

Any other ideas or input? - Buster 00:22, 5 September 2007 (UTC)

O&A's controversies are so intertwined with their history that they should definitely be in the same section. The program content section is fine, but the film references section needs to go. The characters section might be too long I like the other enterprises section except for the name. how about "related work" The station listing is great as-is.

The external links section definitely needs a link to wackbag and FBA

Also, there should be a popular bits section outlining some of their more notable moments

One more thing. There's got to be a better free picture of O&A (and Jimmy) than the one I put in.

This is great. I removed the tag, as the discussion definitely warrants it and you all are doing a great job. Keep working. MamaPajama 14:35, 6 September 2007 (UTC)

Kind of anal but the delay for the Las Vegas station should say 3 hours not 2. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.253.90.207 (talk) 03:14, 19 September 2007 (UTC)

Themes

Please do not remove the daily "themes" of the show. They talk about them just about everyday, and have become a major part of the show. —Preceding unsigned comment added by RedSoxFan3458 (talkcontribs) 04:33, 16 November 2007 (UTC)

A consensus needs to be reached on whether or not to keep the themes of the week in the article or not. An edit war isn't going to help anything. Since none of their other bits are in the article I don't think the themes of the week are notable enough to be included, especially since they seem to be changing weekly. What do others think? -- pb30<talk> 23:58, 1 December 2007 (UTC)

Delete Seems to be a text book example of an unencyclopedic list. Lil' Dice (yeah, I said it!) - talk 03:37, 2 December 2007 (UTC)

Delete These show bits aren't notable enough to make the article. Leave it for a fan site. --Bill.matthews 03:54, 2 December 2007 (UTC)

Delete Completely unnecessary and a waste of space for better additions to the article that can actually be properly cited. Payneos 04:33, 2 December 2007 (UTC)

tucker max

Does anyone think tucker max being outed as a liar on the O&A show should be included in the article? There is a big edit war going on at the Tucker Max article where POV censors are removing any criticisms of Tucker so i was wonering if anyone thought it would be more relevent to put it in this article? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.189.224.173 (talkcontribs)

Characters of the show list...horribly outdated. Anyone wanna help me construct something new and current?

Anyone want to help me make a new character list? I cant believe Lady Di and Marion are still on the list. The rest is outdated or questionable at best.

Lady Di and Marion...havent been on in 2 yrs.

Big A and Stalker Patti are on Ron and Fez more now.

Big Kev? Twichels? How many times has either been on the show in the last year? I certainly dont think either qualifies to be a "character of the show".

Isnt Tom in the nut hut now? At least he was a show character I reckon.

Steve from Yellowstone is on sparsely..if we list that shouldnt we add Ted The Lightbulb expert, Uncle Paul...etc?

I think the only people here who truly qualify as characters, and it's somewhat of a stretch are Pat and Tippy Tom.

Who would you put on a new list of characters?

I wouldn't put NeutralHomer on such a list. Remember when I edited an article to say that the a REPORT of the Greaseman's death had been REPORTED by his then employer?

I hereby challenge Fez to a pencil fight for the hand of Dawn Cumia.
