Is the town named after Oulu in Finland? 80.186.100.180 22:44, 22 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Almost certainly. A lot of Finns settled in northern Wisconsin. Antandrus (talk) 22:45, 22 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Two Finns, John Kangas and Henry Maryland were garanted homesteads in Oulu, May 1889. They are claimed to be the first pioneers in Oulu area. Obviously the Finland-like nature attracted them and their followers.

Yes, Oulu, WI is nearly 100% Finnish with most coming from Old Oulu. Leo1410

Should this be mentioned in the article. The editors please add as you like. --Pudeo (Talk) 13:08, 26 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

According to the 2000 census, 95% of the population still claim Finnish as our primary ancestry. Msauvola 01:44, 7 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

How is the town's name pronounced? Oulu is pronounced "ow-loo" (with the first syllable rhyming with low, not with now). Is this Wisconsin town pronounced "oo-lyoo"? JIP | Talk 20:23, 12 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, pronounced O - as in "low" - lu. Second syllable like saying "loo" but stopping at the first o. (Imagine, me, a Finnish-American giving a Finn pronounciation lessons! Kyl-lä! Msauvola 21:03, 23 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
