Jack Arch?[edit]

Each pier consists of a pair of brick columns, joined top and bottom by semi-circular arches (the bottom one inverted). A jack arch is a flat structure so I cannot see how it fits in here. Can anyone come up with the correct engineering or architectural term? Moletrouser (talk) 13:55, 30 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Design lifespan[edit]

Is the following (bold) text accurate? The viaduct was constructed 1839-1842. 1839+120 years is 1959, which is not "long since" before 1956...

By 1956, the damage to the viaduct was extensive but the cost of refurbishment work was deemed to be too high by British Rail.[4] The degradation was partially a consequence of the structure's long lifespan: when originally constructed, its designers had intended for the structure to have a design life of 120 years, which it had long since exceeded.[6]
