2007 speedy

A tag has been placed on PCPaint, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article seems to be blatant advertising which only promotes a company, product, group or service and which would need to be fundamentally rewritten in order to become an encyclopedia article. I removed the deletion. The deletion message states "You may remove this message if you improve the article, or if you otherwise object to deletion of the article for any reason. I don't understand your position on blatant advertsing. I disagree entirely. Specifically what does a 55 year old Canadian Software developer possibly hope to gain by advertising a product that has not been sold for 22 years?

Hangon

PCPaint is historically significant because it was the first GUI graphics program for the PC. It was widely distributed by Mouse Systems and widely used for several years in the early transition period before Windows. Lyricanjl 05:33, 22 May 2007 (UTC)

• I put {{db-spam}} because of the "need to be fundamentally rewritten in order to become encyclopedic" part of CSD#G11... something like {{WikiProject Biography}} but about a (now discontinued) product. Since my speedy nomination was controversial I am considering {{prod}}. If contested it would became {{afd}}. Note that there are references, but they are unused in the article, and it is not clear how the references endorse the actual content. The subject may be notable, but notability must be asserted somewhere in the article. There are only 2 unsourced sentences which serve this goal: "bundled with millions of mice" and "the best-selling PC paint program of the late 1980s ". Rjgodoy 05:46, 22 May 2007 (UTC)

I am a reliable source. The reason that the rest of the world needs this specific information is that it tells them where the Paintbrush program originated on the IBM PC. That part of computing history is important to me, so why shouldn't it be important to others enjoyed that period of time? Despite all that...

If I buy your argument that in order to be a reliable source one must be published by academia and/or by a commercial publisher, I think I would reverse my position and simply say that why people need this information is not for you or for me to decide.

That is like asking an accountant why anyone would need UML to describe a computer system. Ivar Jacobsen said at the Rational Symposium in Toronto in 1998 that "We used to build doghouses, now we build REAL HOUSES"? As I joined in the applause, I laughed out loud at the two slides on the overhead, one of a decrepit old doghouse and the other of a wonderful Fairfield County-like mansion. At that moment, I knew what I needed to tell our senior management in order to justify the high-cost of those RUP licences for my developers. However, if some looming paternal entity had censored Ivar's content before he had the chance to disseminate it I probably never would have been able to make my case.

"Reliable sources" (WP:RS) is considered a guideline on Wikipedia. Discussion about existing and proposed policies would be best addressed in the Village pump. "Reliable sources are credible published materials with a reliable publication process; their authors are generally regarded as trustworthy, or are authoritative in relation to the subject at hand. The reliability of a source depends on context; what is reliable in one topic may not be in another. A world-renowned mathematician may not be a reliable source on topics of biology. In general, a topic should use the most reliable sources available to its editors." This concern is separated of "why people need this information", about which we are not discussing (I think). Information in article is wrong as of March 23

“In February 1983, Wolfgram traveled to SoftCon in New Orleans where he demonstrated the program to Mouse Systems. Mouse Systems was developing an optical mouse and they wanted to bundle a painting program so they agreed to bundle in Mouse Draw.”

**the dates are wrong here. wolfgram couldn’t have possibly bought a MS Mouse in 81, because they weren’t sold until 83 and he couldn’t have demo it in feb as the ms mouse came out in May 83**Manboobies (talk) 17:29, 3 March 2024 (UTC)
