WikiProject United States?[edit]

This article does meet the standard of: "with an emphasis on subjects with regional and national significance" to be included within the scope of WikiProject United States. There are hundreds of WP articles about automobiles and individual model lines, and none of them are included as an important national topic relating to the United States of America. Please take an objective point of view. There are automobiles that made a difference in the United States (one example is the book "Engines of Change: A History of the American Dream in Fifteen Cars" by Paul Ingrassia, who won a Pulitzer Prize while at The Wall Street Journal for his reports from Detroit) but there is no reliable source that includes Packard's Clipper on their list. For example, Ford's Model T has unquestionably had much more significance in numerous areas within the United States (and in the world), but its WP article does not even meet the standard to be included in the United States WikiProject. Of course, the WP Packard article about the automaker itself is included with WikiProject United States. However, this article simply covers a particular car model and it is not significant at the national, nor even at the State of Indiana level. In summary, there is no real reason to have the WikiProject United States banner for this article. Thanks! CZmarlin (talk) 21:04, 20 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The article was tagged at Indiana level due to the production plant and therefor regional relevance. The article is certainly in need of improvement and that improvement does not happen by removing it from view of the people that might be able to help. If you feel the topic is not notable enaugh then feel free to use the deletion process. Agathoclea (talk) 07:26, 21 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Agathoclea, Why are you suggesting that I take this article through the deletion process? The article is notable because it is about a car line. It properly includes the WikiProject Automobiles because it is directly related to that subject area. However, this article is about the cars, and not about the factory that produced them. In other words (and according to WP guidelines), this "article is only tangentially related to the scope of another WikiProject" and "It is more friendly to omit outside WikiProjects that you think will rate the article as low importance relative to their specific field." Does including more WikiProjects increase the audience and improve the article? No, it is a simple case of over categorization, and WP guidelines state "overtagging is disruptive." Taking your broad definition to the logical extreme, it would be possible to put a "WikiProject United States" banner on each and every article that has mention of the U.S. - all with the purpose of attracting contributors. Therefore, there are other WikiProjects that could be added to the Packard Clipper article because this automobile not only influenced the company, but also its fortunes as an automaker: WikiProject Companies and WikiProject Business, as well as of course, WikiProject Economics. Thus, please keep only the directly related Automobiles WikiProject. CZmarlin (talk) 09:08, 21 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I cannot speak for the other projects if it is within their scope. Having a number of WikiProjects is certainly not "overtagging" as that refers to the boxy things on the article pages complaining about notablily/lack of sources ect. On the other hand I made some random checks across some car-model in different countries and the majority are not country tagged. While the Indiana productionplant certainly has relevance the original tagging was done by a bot 5 years ago. I will remove the US tag for now but will leave a message at the WP Indiana talkpage for further input. Agathoclea (talk) 10:22, 21 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! I found an old Packard manufacturing facility (Packard Automotive Plant) article that has no WikiProject Automobile notice to keeping with other similar articles. Moreover, there is a duplicate article, the Clipper (automobile), that should be merged into this one! It helps to do some housekeeping from time to time! Merger proposal[edit]

Reason for the proposal: the Clipper (automobile) article duplicates content about the Packard cars. CZmarlin (talk) 22:50, 23 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I would lean toward having a separate article on the Clipper model vs the Clipper marque/namplate. But, a single article that clarified between the two would also be OK. RevelationDirect (talk) 01:54, 20 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
