English variety[edit]

I wanted to start a discussion about this, if necessary, as it seems to have been a point of contention of late. I brought this issue up in the following discussion over at WP:FOOTY, and it was rather matter-of-factly established that the English variety of an article can indeed change and should follow the variety used in the nation to which the subject has "strong national ties," which in this case is Ireland (and Hiberno-English). I understand that the article may have been written in British English or with British English in mind, but that does not designate that the article should be updated and expanded in that same variety moving forward. There's a chance that, given the similarities between Hiberno-English and British English, the article itself is no different, as it stands, from one written fully in Hiberno-English. That's good! But adding a note about using Hiberno-English in the future is appropriate, given the nationality of the subject. It also follows the established practises at MOS:ENGVAR, MOS:TIES, and MOS:RETAIN, as well as the discussion I recently started at WP:FOOTY. I am more than willing have a discussion about this, as I am not interested in upsetting anyone or causing a conflict. I am, though, interested in establishing consistency across footballers' articles, of which English variety is a critical part. Here is the link to the discussion concerning this issue at WP:FOOTY: [[1]]. Anwegmann (talk) 17:06, 21 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
