Adding Up-to-Date Content and Correcting Errors[edit]
I am brand new to this process, so please forgive any mistakes. It’s been years since this article has been updated. I’m proposing additions to provide more relevant, accurate and up-to-date information so that people may find this article more useful. According to the American Cancer Society, 91 percent of Americans diagnosed with pancreatic cancer will die within five years. It kills more people than breast cancer. It’s crucial to give those affected by this terrible disease as much valuable information about an organization they can trust to help them right away. The Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (PanCAN) is a United States-based 501(c)(3) charity that funds research, provides patient/caregiver support, conducts community outreach and advocates for increased federal research funding for those affected by the world’s toughest cancer.[1][2]
Since the disease is projected to become the second leading cause of cancer-related death in the U.S. around 2020,[3] the organization established a goal, called the “Vision of Progress,” to double pancreatic cancer survival by 2020.[4] The nonprofit seeks to fulfill the goal by spreading greater awareness and increasing funds for research to improve the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of pancreatic cancer.[5]
One way PanCAN raises awareness and funds is through the 5K walk/run event, PurpleStride. The events include more than 80,000 participants in nearly 60 communities nationwide, which are organized by local volunteer affiliates.[6]
