Papplewick Winding Engine[edit]

Although the Steam Engine is by the much esteemed Roby of Lincoln the fabricated brakes on the winding drum are not but were designed and built by Blacks Mining Equipment Ltd of Bromley, Kent. I used to be a Draughtsman and Estimator with Blacks and their winder brakes were sold direct to the NCB and installed by Black's own Engineers. The brake spring nest on the side of the brake shoe was a design of Alexander Black the company owner and known as the Polkemmet design. The configuration of the brake lining material to the fabricated steel shoe was patented and known as the root two design being related to Pythagorus theorem.
